Betty Schumacher Lander, loving wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on, Saturday the 28th of December 2013, with the love and support of her family. She was born on the 19th of October 1924 to Elizabeth Buddy Schumacher and August Henry Schumacher. Her pioneer August Bering family were settlers of Houston in the 1830's, making Mrs. Lander a fourth-generation Houstonian. She graduated from Lamar High School and the University of Texas where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After graduating in 1945, she met the love of her life, Frank Blair Lander, II, on a bridge date and they married on the 23rd of July, 1949.
Mrs. Lander became a Bayou Bend Docent in 1966, was a member of the Southern Garden Club, the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Junior League of Houston, the Forest Club and Christ Church Cathedral where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She was active in the community, serving on the boards of the Junior League of Houston, Inc., the Girls Scouts of America and the San Jacinto Museum of History.
Mrs. Lander, a woman of faith, had a blessed life. She was generous, cheerful, courageous and fiercely independent. She loved her family, friends, playing bridge and sports. She so enjoyed spending summers at her bay home.
Mrs. Lander was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, her parents, her sister, Ann Schumacher Adkins, and brother-in-law Ward Noble Adkins. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Lander, August Schumacher Lander and Beth Brownlee, Vivian Holland Lander Permenter, and Oscar McVean Lander, II, and wife Jean; her grandchildren Lauren Elizabeth Permenter, Colin Johnson, Frank Noble Permenter, Joseph Lander Permenter, Samuel Thomas Permenter, Frank Blair Lander, III, and Emily Grace Lander; her great grandchild, Helena Orion Johnson; her nephews, Ward Noble Adkins, Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, and John August Adkins and his wife, Cynthia; her cousin Carl Willers Schumacher, Jr. and his wife Martha; her brother-in-law Traylor Lander of Hutchins, Texas; and numerous other relatives.
The family acknowledges and expresses their deep appreciation to her doctors and caregivers, especially Donna Prince, Jacqueline Levi, Dorothy Smith, Dollie White and Lisa White.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Mrs. Lander is to be conducted at half-past eleven o'clock in the morning on Thursday, the 2nd of January, at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue in Houston, where the Rev. James M. L. Grace is to officiate.
Immediately following all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent Latham Auditorium.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery.
