Pat Scroggins Obituary

Pat Regan Scroggins Through her deep devotion to Jesus, to his Blessed Mother and to St. Joseph, Pat Scroggins modeled her life on the Holy Family. She was born in Austin, Texas on December 7, 1929 the daughter of Dan Regan and Kathleen Koock Regan. She graduated from St. Agnes Academy in 1947, having received the annual Rotary Citizenship Award. She then earned her BA in Education from Sacred Heart Dominican College, followed by a BS in Physical Education from the University of Houston. She taught math and P.E. at St. Agnes for five years, and she taught at Sacred Heart for ten years.
Pat's highest vocation was in Holy Matrimony. She married Jerry M. Scroggins on October 27, 1951 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. From that day 63 years ago until her death on May 9, 2014, the love of Pat and Jerry Scroggins was a true reflection of the image of God. Theirs was a holy, covenantal, heroic love of devotion, respect, friendship, and good humor. They were the picture of unity. Pat and Jerry had 9 children, 31 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren with one more on the way.
For Pat Scroggins, "Family" was not limited to relatives. Her love of family was generously shared with countless others. Pat was legendary for her service and her hospitality, both of which were deeply rooted in her Catholic faith. She served God and others, but in her mind "serving God" and "serving others" were the same thing. Some of her favorite times were spent in service to her Catholic communities, especially St. Thomas More Catholic Church and School, St. Agnes Academy, St. Thomas High School, and the University of St. Thomas. She was a champion for Catholic education, for our priests and sisters, and for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. St. Thomas More School honored her during the 1977-78 school year with "Pat Scroggins Day." In 2004, the school recognized her with the Commitment to Catholic Education award.
Her gift of service was expressed most personally with her hospitality, for which Pat had a spiritual dimension. She had the ability to create a space where others felt loved. From coffee with friends after 7:40 mass, to housing strangers needing rest after treatment at the Med Center, Pat welcomed all. Christmas was always a particularly special time. There was no telling who would be at the Christmas dinner table, but Pat would have a gift for them. She opened her home and her heart to others, thus drawing them closer to Christ.
Pat was predeceased by her mother and father, Kathleen and Dan, plus her sisters Dona Ann Regan Dextraze and Brigid Regan Brinkman. She is survived by her husband, Jerry, and her sister, Sister Mary Kenneth Regan, C.S.C. Pat and Jerry's children and their children's spouses are: Kathleen Warner (Ben), Jeannette Jeffus (James), Jerry M. Scroggins, Jr. (Carol), Daniel J. Scroggins (Melissa), MaryPat Baringer (Michael), Cecile Guarino (Michael), Theresa Price (Bill), Eileen Kelley (Kurt), and Laura Bobzien (Greg). She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom had a special relationship with their "Mah." Wonderful memories of Jell-O eggs, initial pancakes, root beer floats, quilts, and lots of cousin time at Mah's house will be treasured.
Visitation will be Monday, May 12th, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the recitation of the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Pat's funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13th, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Both services will be at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10330 Hillcroft St., Houston, TX 77096. Graveside services will be at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery, 13102 North Freeway, following the reception.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Thomas More Catholic School Foundation, St. Agnes Academy, St. Thomas High School, or the University of St. Thomas.

Your Mom was the greatest person to me! I remember her first finding me when I was spending the night playing hide and go seek behind a big chair before you all moved to the house by STM. Throughout grade school and high school she was a constant source of inspiration for me. In fourth grade I went to church everyday and watched your mom. She would kneel down and pray (Laura at her side at that time) and pray for each of you. She was there everyday. I imitated her. I tried to pray as long as she did-it was hard to do that! One day I asked her how she could pray that long and she told me it was easy. She prayed for all of her gifts that the Lord had given her. In my life I have never forgotten her words. It is so easy to pray when thinking of the Lord"s blessings. She was blessed with 9 great blessings and many grand blessings! Every shirt she pressed and every cake she baked was not a chore but a loving opportunity to be of service to those she held dearest! But, to the fortune of some of us, she welcomed us into her inner fold and raised us as her own. She disciplined with a kindly word, gave us advice for the future, and loved us when we needed to feel loved. Your mom was truly a great woman of God. I know I am not alone when I say-I will not forget her. You know it is funny somehow. Fourth grade stayed with me. I know to pray for my blessings because of your mom...My love to all of you. Especially Theresa-my friend.

I have considered Pat as my extra mom for my entire life. I know my mom considered her a sister, and welcomes her now. Many years of beach trips and family celebrations are wonderful memories. Pat epitomized a classy lady, and the best example of living our Catholic faith of anyone I have ever known. Her lessons on how to life our lives will live on in our families forever.

Dear Scroggins family, Your mother's life lives on in all of you. You are all a reflection of a mother's job well done. What a wonderful job she did in molding and grounding all of you to be the person God wanted you to be. We all know a mother's main job is to lead her children on the right path to God in Heaven and she will be greatly rewarded for this.Your gift to her memory is to follow in her footsteps. We know this is a difficult time for all of you but with the love and support of family and friends, you will get through this. Dear Jerry Sr., Kathleen, Jeanette, Jerry Jr., Danny, MaryPat, Cecile, Theresa, Eileen and Laura: your mom was everything and more of what was mentioned in the beautiful tribute I just read. Her faithfulness, faithful suffering, humor, warmth, hospitality and love for all people truly cannot be measured...neither can the impact she had on those around her be measured. And while our Faith forges Hope and tells us that we will all be together again in eternity, her immediate loss, no matter the relief and joy, leaves us sad and longing for just a little more time together now. My prayers for her and all of you are on my lips and in my heart. May time heal you. May she rest peacefully in the Loving Arms of Our Lord.
