CHARLES CUSHMAN CATE (Papo) 72, died on December 2, 2010 in Katy, Texas from complications of Alzheimer disease.
Charles was born January 14, 1938 in San Antonio and graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas. He earned his BBA from the University of Texas in Austin. "Hook 'um Horns" was his favorite thing to say to anyone and everyone.
He received his law degree from South Texas College of Law and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1969. From 1970 to 1977, he served as a Harris County Assistant District Attorney and was a sole practitioner until 2002.
He loved his family, hunting and fishing in Cisco, Texas and "jumping out of airplanes" with the 71st and 36th Airborne Brigades of the Texas Army National Guard. Charlie served for nearly 22 years, retiring as a Lt. Colonel.
He served his community in many ways including past president of the Katy Lions Club, Katy Bar Association, Waller County Bar Association and the STCL Alumni Association. He was a past director the Katy Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Bend County Criminal Defense Lawyers' Association. He was elected to the KISD School Board in 1984. Charlie was a Mayflower descendent and a member of Grace Presbyterian Church of Houston.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Jessie Mary Cate. He is survived by his devoted wife of forty years, Ruby Cate; two daughters, Susan Weigl and husband, Russell of Sugar Land, Texas; Chana Beene and husband, Brett of Mexia, Texas; five grandchildren, Kyley, Karson and Grayson Weigl and Blair and Chet Beene; and three brothers, James, Patrick, and David Cate.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel, in Katy, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Thomas officiating. Interment in Katy Magnolia Cemetery.
