C. Eugene Moore, 91, died on March 18, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Moore lived previously in Houston, the longtime home of his wife, Jane Moore. Mr. Moore was born in Gary, Indiana on October 7, 1919, the only child of Charles Eugene Moore and Gladys Butcher. He graduated from Oak Park High School in 1937. Attending Beloit College and Indiana University, he discovered an aptitude for business studies. While working as a full-time executive, Mr. Moore achieved his lifelong goal of earning an MBA, awarded by the University of Chicago in 1971.
As Vice President of Manufacturing at major corporations, and a management consultant, Mr. Moore developed expertise in managing and increasing manufacturing productivity. General Motors Electromotive Division, Yale and Towne, Mack Trucks, and Singer Corporation were a few of the companies that benefited from Mr. Moore's innovative approach to management. Mr. Moore shared his experiences and insights with managers all over the country in executive seminars for the American Management Association and in articles such as: Managers - Best Read is Best Said; Back to Basics in Operations Management: A Way to Regain the Competitive Edge; and a chapter in The Management Handbook, (Wiley and Sons).
Throughout his life, Mr. Moore demonstrated an unceasing intellectual curiosity and passion for learning. He pursued a wide variety of interests outside his work, including painting, philosophy, and politics. In 1950, as founder of Education for Democracy in Oak Park Illinois, he ran as the Republican candidate for the U.S. Congress in the 10th District.
Mr. Moore is survived by his wife, the former Jane Perrin, his devoted companion of 24 years. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Jean McFeely of Oak Park, Illinois. He is also survived by their four children: Gaylen Moore, a writer and education consultant; Mark H. Moore, Professor at Harvard University in the Kennedy School of Government, the Graduate School of Education, and the Harvard Business School; Franklin Moore, President of Moore and Moore Sales, and AV Stumpfl USA; and Penelope Cake, artist and teacher, as well as seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Frances Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas on Friday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m., 345 North Piney Point Road. In place of flowers, please make a donation to a favorite charity.
