With an AFS Educator II award to Switzerland, she added lifelong friends in that country as well as in Germany. In 1976, Dell was decorated by the Federal Republic of Germany with the Cross of Merit (das Verdienstkreuz am Bande). She retired In 1985 while serving as director of HISD's Foreign Language Academy and continued to be involved in many academic activities as long as her health permitted. Ann:

Dell was a guiding light during my 27 years in Houston. She mentored and guided me back into the teaching of German, a profession I had set aside in order to rear my children and be a housewife.

I remember with special warmth the meetings and social gatherings hosted by Dell and Woodrow in their lovely home.

More important than our professional connection, Dell and I share the same firm Christian faith that guides us through all life's meanderings and ultimately leads us home to Jesus.

I thank God for Dell and pray for her family and friends in their loss.

Dear Ann and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of the death of your mother, Dell. Evelyn called me with the sad news. Dell was my colleague and friend for close to 50 years, and she had a profound influence on my life. I am so glad that Jim and I made the trip to Texas 3 years ago. We had a wonderful visit with Dell and Woody, and, to their amusement, we all went in search of our favorite cafeteria for dinner and my favorite, Millionaire's Pie! (Das gibt es nur in Texas) I hope the three of them have met again in a better place, and can enjoy another piece of pie together.
Ann, I know your loss is great, but I hope your memories will give you comfort. Please know that you have my deepest symphaty.Love, Inge
