Donald Berthelsen Obituary
Donald Melvin Berthelsen, aged 87, passed away on March 5, 2014. He is survived by his wife of sixty eight years, Alice May, his three sons, Douglas, Spencer, and Richard, his two daughters in law, Linda and Janice, his two grand daughters Kathryn and Alice May and grandson Donald. Don served in the U.S. Navy 1944 to 1946 in Air Intelligence, achieving the rank of Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve. After obtaining his Industrial Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota, he entered the insurance industry with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, becoming sales manager for the Houston area. He then built and managed his own independent insurance agency in the Meyerland area for several decades.He served the industry and its clients as an instructor. After serving as president of the Houston chapter of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters, Don became a national director of the society. Don enjoyed being an umpire for the Meyerland Little League for several years. He was an active member and strong supporter of the League of Women Voters of Houston, often saying he joined as soon as the League gave him a vote. He also contributed to the Heights area. He owned and managed several rental properties in the neighborhood and served on the Houston Apartment Association's arbitration committee. In retirement, he was a prolific letter writer, offering his advice to public officials. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 2 pm at the Bradshaw Carter Home, 1734 W.
