Joan Thomson Balkenberg , born in New York City on the 22nd of March 1926, died at North Cypress Medical Center in Cypress, Texas, on Wednesday, the 12th of December 2012, in the presence of family members. Her husband, Louis Balkenberg, died in 1991. She is survived by: her daughter from a previous marriage, Patricia Lyn Richards, PhD, of Gambier, Ohio; by Louis' children, Judith Roseman of New Jersey, Jerald and Jason Balkenberg of Dayton, Texas; her sister, Reverend Jane T. MacColl, of Spring, Texas, and her brother, Edward G. Thomson, Esq., of New York City.

Joan graduated from Hunter High School in NYC, received her bachelor's degree in economics from Smith College in 1948, followed by two master degrees, which led to a rich and diverse professional life in education and library science. She was active in local politics and was a founding member and active participant of Heritage Presbyterian Church.
In her retirement she continued her many activities, studying Spanish and computer science, attending exercise class and the Bear Creek Friday Coffee Club.
The service will be Saturday, December 15th, 2012, at 2:00 pm at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 7934 Highway 6, Houston, Texas 77095, officiated by Reverend Mark Plunkett. Family will receive friends at Heritage Presbyterian Church starting at 1:00 pm Saturday before the service; a reception will follow.
