Kathryn McGuire Obituary

McGuire
Kathryn Leigh McGuire, also known as the socialite, "Charles/Kathryn" died last week in her home in Palm Springs, CA. She was sixty-eight years old. Kathryn made a splash on the social scene in the late eighties and nineties as Houston's own transvestite millionaire socialite. She gave generously to all kinds of Houston's AIDS organizations and was one of the first to sit on a board to find a cure for the then unknown disease. She was involved in politics and ran for Houston City Council garnering her national publicity as one of the first open transvestites to run for public office in the United States. She was the subject of the PBS documentary, "The Last Days of Charles/Kathryn McGuire". She was also seen on Good Morning Houston, featured on several local and national talk shows and in articles in The Houston Post, The Houston Chronicle and The Houston Press. She attended George Bush's Sr. inauguration in Washington D.C. Charles/Kathryn underwent sexual reassignment surgery in 1992 and became simply known as Kathryn. As a woman, she talked about the trials of a post-operative transsexual in a stand-up comedy routine she performed around New York City and on her website zwamp.com. She lived out the rest of her life, happily, as a full-time woman, a long childhood wish.
Kathryn had heaps of personality, charming wit and an eye for fashion. She will be missed terribly by her surviving daughter Barbara, son James and her two grandchildren, whom she continually told to question all assumptions, to blaze your own path in life and to conquer all kinds of fear and judgments. A private service will be held in her honor by family members.

I have so often thought of you. I mostly knew you as Charlie but also Kathryn (before the operation) and I came to know that no matter who, Charlie or Kathryn, both really were one person. I know how much you loved your children. You were very gracious in all. You were very generous to me and I will miss the fact you are no longer here. You were one of the braveset souls I've known. We are so surprised to hear of Kathryn's passing. We knew her in the '70s as Charlie, worked together on a construction project for the Navy in Corpus Christi. We met his family at that time. Later while on a trip to Czech Republic in the '90s we looked her up and was entertained by the facinating story of her life.

Our condolences to her family.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Kathryn's passing. We first became friends in the early 90's after her transformation. We had dinner together; and, on another day, attended chapel, as she was a deeply spiritual person. When she moved to Prague, we corresponded, and my one regret is that I did not have a chance to visit her there. I will miss her bright smile and quick wit.

This news of Kathryn's death is hard to believe. When I knew her in the early 90's she was a force to contend with. Half horse, half alligator, at our first meeting she threatened to drive her six inch stiletto heel through my brain!

Despite a rough start Kathryn persuaded me to film her daily life during the time she was preparing for surgery to become a "new woman". Together we filmed at social events in Houston, a drag race, at her home with local transvestites and finally in England where she had the operation. The film, "The Last days of Charles/ Kathryn" was screened on PBS and won some awards.

I remember Kathryn as a great soul unafraid to live life to the full. Her closet shall forever remain empty.

Charles/Kathryn was a " regualar " on the Stevens and Pruett Radio show on KLOL back in the day. She was fascinating as she recanting in full her life as a man in the construction industry and her sexual reassignment. She fielded phone calls after phone calls from listeners each time she went on the air with us. So sorry to hear of her passing. She was a trail blazer.
