Stephen Richard Ganns
1950-2015
Stephen Richard Ganns was born October 20, 1950, in Dallas, Texas. He peacefully departed this life surrounded by family and friends on July 16, 2015, in Houston, Texas. Stephen was a longtime resident of Houston. He graduated from Bellaire High School and matriculated to the University of Texas where he earned a BBA in Finance. While at UT, Stephen was the President of his fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau. During his life, Stephen had the charisma and charm to easily make friends. He maintained many friendships for decades until his passing. Stephen leaves a legacy of family, devotion and friendship. He was a businessman with a long career in commercial real estate; however, his true devotion was to music, as he was a composer and pianist. Stephen spent his lifetime in pursuit of education, loving people and supporting the arts. Stephen was preceded in death by his fathers, Sherwin Ganns and Norman J. Schnurr, and by his brother-in-law Ronald Bass. He is survived by his loving mother, Bernice Schnurr; loving sisters Cindy Bass Senior (David), Josette Schaffner (Fred), Bonnie Glazer (Morton); dear friends Janice Avery and Katherine Avery Guillot (Thomas). Stephen also leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Emanu El located at 1500 Sunset Blvd, Houston, Texas 77005, on Sunday, July 19, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, please honor Stephen's spirit by making donations to the memorial contributions to the Stephen Richard Ganns Memorial Fund at The Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, P. O. Steve was a great musician and a better friend. I was honored to collaborate with him. He´s sorely missed. I and others are determined to help his music live on. God bless you, Steve. Chauncey, Oliver, Silky and I thank you for your generosity, kindness and friendship when things were a little crazy. Stephen, you make us smile and laugh; showed me not to take myself too seriously. I will always treasure that. Laughter is the best medicine and we'll love you forever.
