Vanessa Gerondale Obituary

Vanessa Rein Gerondale
1957-2017
Vanessa Rein Gerondale, 60, born September 27, 1957 died peacefully Dec. 12th, 2017 surrounded by loving family in her home after a brief experience with pancreatic cancer.
A consummate lover of great literature and keen observer of politics, she possessed a gifted palate for cuisine and expressed her love of family and friends over decades by crafting amazing meals. Around the dinner table she was a self-described fiscal conservative and social liberal.
Vanessa grew up working in the family business "Industrial Instrument Works" in New Orleans and attended all girls' Catholic High School "Mercy Academy" and studied French during a high school summer in Jonquière Saguenay, Quebec, Canada. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The University of Oklahoma with a B.S. in Sociology and a special interest in criminal deviancy. One semester she served as a legislative aid to US Rep. Lindy Boggs –Dem. in Washington D.C., and one semester studied the criminal justice system working at the Lexington Assessment and Reception Center –Okla. Dept. Corrections. She met her future husband, Gavin while volunteering at "Number Nyne" suicide/crisis hot line in Norman Oklahoma.
She worked administratively at Lyman Personnel to help put Gavin through Optometry School at UH then worked in their optical business getting their fledgling practice off the ground. Finally she pursued her dreams of being a "stay at home mom" raising two sons Joey and Spencer, and providing leadership in Cub and Boy Scouts and Parent/Teacher organizations. After her sons went off to college, she initiated her own business as a purveyor of mid. century modern antiques, "Two Blue", which she operated for 13 years on 19th St. in the Heights. She enjoyed a brief cameo of stardom on TV in a national advertising campaign for Activia Yogurt! Vanessa spent her last eight years volunteering for a non-profit organization Houston Mod, dedicated to the preservation of modern design and architecture. Her passion and advocacy were exemplified by achieving "Historic Protected Landmark "designation for her beloved 1965 Brooks & Brooks designed residence in Meyerland.
The family traveled extensively and Vanessa enjoyed planning the trips as much as the trips themselves. Favorite destinations were the Canadian Maritime Provinces, British Columbia and Alberta. She said she never had a bad time in Canada. A week in Paris, France and SCUBA diving in Hawaii were additional highlights.
Vanessa's final wish is to have her ashes scattered into the Mississippi River in Memphis, TN for the longest Southern ride back to her native New Orleans.
Vanessa is survived by her husband of 39 years Dr. Gavin Gerondale, son Joey and wife Annie Gerondale in Kansas City, son Spencer and wife Missy Gerondale in Houston, and sisters Pamela and husband Bernard Sontag in New Orleans and Melissa and husband Traiwin Malone in Austin.

Very sad to have lost such a good sister in law. Will miss her vibrant & quick-witted sense of humor at family gatherings. Words cannot describe the sudden disappointment of hearing a surprise diagnosis of severe illness. My heart goes out to Gavin & the rest of the family.

My heart is broken. I hadn't talked to Vanessa in years but thought of her and the Gerondale family often. Such fond memories of the family and our Red Preschool days. I kept the boys a lot for long weekends and when Vanessa and Gavin went on vacations. I was their Mardi Gras weekend sitter several years in a row. I loved Vanessa's laugh. She had the energy of 10 women. She knew how to get things done. This is a great loss. I am thinking of you all. Jodi Sweeny

So sadden by your loss. As a 3rd grade teacher at Red Elementary and a Den Leader in Pack 688, I was a witness to Vanessa's devotion not only to Joey and Spencer but to all children. Vanessa was an inspiration and a beacon to those who were priviledged to know her. Cindy (Williams) Henry

Dear Gavin,
I am terribly saddened to hear of Vanessa. She was a rare individual in so many ways, good, kind and brilliant to name a few.
I remain in awe of her cooking skills, the many memories of the annual Astros parties and dinners with our monthly book club. When her turn, she didn't just cook dinner, she put on the Ritz! It was always special.
I am glad to have called her my friend, she will be forever missed.. by so many.
My thoughts are with you, Joey and Spencer

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to the Gerondale family and friends for the passing of your dear loved one. Losing a loved one in death is never easy. One day many will have the opportunity to live again. May the hope of everlasting life sustain and comfort you during this difficult time (John 17:3). When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure in your heart and it lives forever. May the wonderful treasures fill your hearts with love and bring you peace.

Dear Gavin, Joey and Spencer,

I am profoundly sorry for the loss of Vanessa. She was smart and funny and always knew her own mind. I enjoyed chairing committees with her whether it was Scouts or the PTO she always gave it her all. I've thought about some of the funny stories and encounters I had with her over the years and find myself smiling thru tears. I hope you can do so as well.

My thoughts are with you. Catherine Ritter

The Rice Design Alliance is saddened to learn of this news. Vanessa was so generous to share her home on our tour last year. We will remember her passion for architecture and willingness to share her story of resiliency.

As a fellow Mod, I was always welcomed by Vanessa meeting and greeting at the tour doors! Her proud house restoration was simply one of the best mid 20th centuries ever! The mods lost a shinning star!

Gavin--Please know how sad I feel for your loss. As you know much better than I, Vanessa was smart, curious, opinionated, kind, and sophisticated (I could go on, but I won't). She and I met in the summer of 1978 and were brief roommates while we each interned in DC. I thought she was soooo sophisticated. She taught me to put on eyeliner and her special mascara. How many 2-month roommates, never living in the same city, stay friends ever after? Okay, it helped that she lived in my hometown :)

I am glad I was able to connect with her by email after Harvey. She was her usual determined self about historic restoration of your beloved home. As we say in my tradition: May her memory be for a blessing. She will always be in my heart.

Take care,
Robin (Kosberg)
