I have been reminded many times of the great love he had for Baylor. He led many others to be more interested in Baylor on a daily basis. He never missed a chance to go to Baylor and be a part of all the activities going on and to encourage others to do the same.

Vernon was so special to so many people. He made each of us feel as if we were the most important person to him, as he comforted us. I will never forget Vernon being in the hospital and sneeking down a couple of floors to check on me. We really laughed until they caught him and made him go back. Vernon will always live in my heart.

Yvonne, many pleasant memories of Vernon entered my mind as I learned of his passing. Most of all, I recall Vernon's dedication to Baylor University, where I was privileged to join Arthur Andersen's on-campus Baylor recruiting team. Vernon treated me like a Baylor alumnus...and somehow had me listed as a Baylor graduate! To this day, I still receive mail and telephone calls from Baylor, assuming I am a graduate. Vernon shall remain, in my memory, one of the most delightful individuals I have ever known.

Vernon will be missed sorely by all who knew him.

Like Harold and so many others, my professional career began with Mr. Garrett at AA&Co. I was fortunate to work very close with Vernon when the Small Business Practice was created back in '68. What a great man. May his memory fill your hearts and minds with joy during the years to come.

I've only known Vernon and Yvonne for the 2 years we've lived at University Place. Vernon was a calm and pleasant influence on those around him. He'll be missed by all of his neighbors at UP.

I was thinking of Vernon today while I looked through the recent Baylor Alumni magazine. News of his death is shocking. Vernon was a wonderful person and we join Yvonne and his family in mourning his loss.

Baylor University has lost one of its greatest supporters. We all have lost a dear friend.

Yvonne, I still have fond memories of how Vernon helped me as a very young and inexperienced minister of youth at SMBC. As chairman of the personnel committee, he went above & beyond the call of duty to help me "learn the ropes." And I also recall how your home was always open for youth fellowships. The two of you were an inspiration to me. My thoughts & prayers are with you.

Vernon hired me at Arthur Andersen & Co. and was always available for counsel and advice. We later served together on the Board of Memorial Hermann Hospital. What a gracious and truly gentlemanly man of the old school. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To Beth, Barry, and the rest of the Garrett Family,
My deepest condolences on the loss of a wonderful husband, father, and friend. It was wonderful to read about the very full and blessed life he lived. While there is still grief, sadness, and longing during this temporary separation between us and heaven, there is comfort in knowing that he is with Christ.... not lost but found. You are all in my prayers at this difficult time.
In Christ,
Diane - coworker of Barry

Once I "grew up" Uncle Vernon took to calling me Uncle Chuck. Natalie was always Natalie Gann to him. He was always Uncle Vernon to us. We have so many memories, but for some reason this weekend I was reminded of Uncle Vernon cosigning a $400 note for Natalie and me when we first moved to Houston two weeks after graduation from Baylor and one week after our wedding. I was pretty amazed that he could walk into the lobby of Texas Commerce Bank and get money for me so easily. That tided us over until I started with Arthur Andersen the next week. We will all miss him so, but are truly blessed that he was a part of our lives for so long.

To the Garrett family,
I am one of the twin daughters of Billy and Jean Mann, long time Arthur Andersen friends. I am so sorry to hear about Vernon's death. I will always have appreciation for the members of our Arthur Andersen family. It was so very special. Please know that I care very much that he has died. But I know of your wonderful Baptist faith and have no doubt where he is right now.
Sincerely,
Debra Mann

"Well, T. Bradley, how have you been!?" Those were always Uncle Vernon's first words whenever we met, always spoken with a big smile on his face and laughter in his voice. As a child, I never understood the game of "42," but I wanted to play anyway, because Uncle Vernon enjoyed it so much, and made eveyone else happy when they played with him. I can only imagine what Grandmommy, Jon, and Bill Logue are doing right now, but I know with whom they are sharing the moment, and I'll bet dominos, cards and Baylor figure prominently in their conversation. If a life of commitment, integrity, and faith means anything at all, then Uncle Vernon's legacy is majestic, and will span generations to come. Our love to all of you in this time of your loss.

Vernon was a thoughtful and trusted friend. I can list numbers of times when a family member was in the hospital, you would look up and Vernon would be there. In time of celbration Vernon was among the first to say Congratulations. In time of sorrow Vernon was among the first to put his arm around you and say "We will be praying for you". Yvonne I know you will miss him you two have been partners for many years. We are your friends and want to help you in any way we can. Let us know when to be near and when to give you space.
We love you.

Yvonne and family, so sorry to hear of Vernon's passing. He was always one of my favorite people. He had such a great love for family, his work, his church , and Baylor University. He and Walter Plumhoff interviewed me on the campus at Baylor and recommended that I be hired. What a life changing experience for me as well as the years of mentoring from Vernon. He was always extremely helpful to all those around him and showed his love for people. He will be sorely missed but I know he will be watching us all from the heaven that he deserves. Yvonne, best to you and the family. Harold Cunningham
