Donald Ray Ford, February 12, 1937 -
February 16, 2014
Donald Ray Ford, 77, passed away February 16, 2014 on his beloved ranch in Kerrville, Texas. He was born in Greenville, Mississippi on February 12, 1937 and grew up in the Mississippi Delta. In 1955, he received a football scholarship to Mississippi State University. It was during this period that Donald met Phyllis and after a year and a half, decided to marry and move to Texas. Donald also decided to pursue a career in Agriculture - his major in college.
In 1967, he went to work for American Plant Food where he had a successful 47 year career. He was currently serving as Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President. While at American Plant Food, Donald was actively involved in the Southwest Fertilizer Conference where he served as a past chairman and a board member for approximately 10 years. In addition, Donald served as a board member of the Fertilizer Institute and the Texas Plant Food Institute.
Throughout his years, Donald remained an avid supporter of Mississippi State University. He is a lifetime member of the Mississippi State Alumni Association and a member of both the "M" Club and the Bulldog Club. In October 2005, he received an Achievement Award from the MSU School of Agriculture and Life Science. In 2013, he was chosen as Alumnus of the Year for the School of Agriculture and Life Science, which was the highlight of his continued support of Mississippi State.
Donald was a true outdoorsman with his love for hunting, fishing and sports - especially football.
He is preceded in death by his parents, W.C. "Boss" Ford and Myrtle Mosley Ford. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis M. Ford; son, Donald R. Ford, Jr. and wife, Christi; son, Stanley T. Ford and wife, Michelle; grandchildren, Heather N. Ford, Victoria L. Ford, Tristan G. Ford, and Weston R. Ford; brother, James N. Ford and wife, Kathleen.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 20, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2014, both at Grimes Funeral Chapels, Kerrville, Texas. Burial will be held at Garden of Memories Cemetery, Kerrville, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Newcomb, Toby Hlavinka, Mark Hembree, Jesse Stephenson, Donnie Dickerson and Randy Hulvey. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of American Plant Food: Tom Gattle, Charlie Harrison, John Jenkins, John Suddarth, Butch Williams, Greg Winborn, Trey Winborn, along with Charlie Johnston, Tommy Taylor and Howard Brent.
Everyone is welcome to stop by Rancho Piedro Colina at 525 Ranch House Road for food and fellowship after the service.
