Harriet Miller |
Correll, born in 1927 to Elva and Harry Miller, Jr. in St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2014 in Houston, Texas after a battle with lung cancer.
As a child, prior to World War II, she lived in Paris, France for several years when her father worked for the Rockefeller Foundation. After absorbing the French language while in Paris, she continued to study it in high school in Tenafly, New Jersey and chose it as her major at Middlebury College in Vermont. Following graduation, she worked in New York City for Newsweek Magazine. It was at that time she met her future husband, Alan Correll. After their marriage in 1952, they lived in England for 1 ½ years where Al was involved in constructing facilities at the Esso Refinery. After returning to New Jersey, they designed and built a home in Millington in 1955. Throughout their lives, Al and Harriet enjoyed skiing, tennis, snorkeling, sailing and world-wide travel, as well as raising their children, Peter, Diane and Jeff.
In 1977 Al was transferred to Houston where he retired in 1986. During that time Harriet worked part-time for the Houston Convention Bureau and Theater Under the Stars, doing computer design work for the programs for their various productions. Her love of reading led to being an active member in two book clubs. Her interest in technology led to membership in a computer club, where she gained knowledge to build her own computer. She attended French classes to keep herself fluent in the language she loved so much. She and Al were involved in two supper clubs as well as activities at the Nottingham Forest Club and the Parkway Place Retirement Community.
Family life was most important to Harriet and she loved interacting with her children, their spouses, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. Family reunions held in all parts of the United States became a special time for the whole family. The family will gather in Austin to celebrate and remember her life well-lived.
Harriet was predeceased by her parents, Elva and Harry Miller, Jr., and her brother, Robert Miller. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Alan Correll, her children, Peter Correll and wife Nora Mann of Boston; Diane Bauknight and husband Rick of Houston; Jeff Correll and wife Lisa of Austin; nine grandchildren: David and Justin Correll, Jamie and Kellie Bauknight, Jessica Correll Combs and husband Charles, Ian and Jacob Correll, Ryan and Sarah Hall, and great-grandson, Harrison Combs.
