Ida Matocha Obituary
Ida Louise Stoever Matocha, age 93, passed peacefully into God's hands on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Ida is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Alphonse Matocha, son, John Matocha and wife Karen Gentile-Matocha; daughter, Mary Matocha; daughter, Martha Matocha and husband, Han van Dijk; daughter, Rebecca Gould and husband, Marvin Gould; daughter, Susan Schoeman and husband, T.J. Schoeman; daughter, Ann Bacon and husband, Bob Bacon; and daughter, Theresa Matocha and husband, Michael Borrello, and ten grandchildren: Lauren, Vincent and Monica Matocha; Nicolaas van Dijk; Ashley Gould; Alexa and John Schoeman; and Sam, Angela and Joseph Borrello. Ida is also survived by her brother, N. J. Stoever and was pre-deceased by brothers Paul and Eugene Stoever.
Ida was born on July 6, 1920 in Schulenburg, Texas to Paul and Selma Stoever. She developed a strong work ethic at a young age growing up on a large dairy farm. Ida graduated from Schulenburg High School and Providence School of Nursing in Waco, Texas. Her first nursing assignment was to care for patients housed at the Carville Lepersorium in Louisiana. She volunteered her nursing skills during the 1947 Texas City disaster. Ida worked for many years as a surgical nurse at Providence Hospital in Waco and as the night nursing supervisor at Sam Houston Memorial Hospital.
Ida married Alphonse George Matocha of Cameron, Texas on September 10, 1949 at St. Rose's Catholic Church in Schulenburg. Their lifelong commitment to one another was based on faith and love. Together they raised seven children. In her later years, Ida took great enjoyment in pursuing crafts such as needlepoint and Brazilian embroidery. She was especially passionate about quilting and took great pleasure in being part of the Houston Cenacle quilting group. Her other hobbies included dancing, cooking and gardening.
Ida will be remembered for her selfless devotion to her family and will forever serve as a role model of perseverance, strength and kindness. Ida will be truly missed.
The Matocha family will be present to receive friends Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Holy Rosary recitation beginning at 7:00 PM at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77079. The Funeral Mass will commence Friday, April 25, 2014 at 1:00 PM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079. Committal services will follow mass at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. A reception will follow burial services at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, St. Jude Hall.
