Elaine Moore Obituary
Elaine Meredith Ghrist Moore, 61, passed away on June 28 after a long struggle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, James Moore, and her children, Meredith Elizabeth Moore and Gregory James Moore and his wife, Jennifer Morales Moore. She is also survived by her precious grandchildren, Lucia Elena Moore and James Eduardo Moore, as well as her mother, Elizabeth (Liz) Ghrist, her sister, Genie McMillan, her brothers, Dr. Robert Ghrist and John Meredith Ghrist, Jr., and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father, John Meredith Ghrist.
Elaine was born in Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, on July 5, 1952. She grew up in Houston and was valedictorian of her class at Robert E. Lee High School. She then graduated from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and the University of Houston Law School, where she met her husband, Jim.
Elaine practiced law for ten years as a corporate attorney specializing in oil and gas law, but she gave up her successful practice to devote all of her time to her children, Greg and Meredith. She never regretted that decision and always took great pride in her children and in their achievements. She taught them to value education and hard work, to travel as often as possible, and to seek out simple pleasures. In her later years, Elaine adored spending time with her grandchildren, Lucy and Jimmy, who brought so much joy to her life. She also developed a great relationship with her sweet daughter-in-law, Jenn, whom she loved very much.
Elaine was a lifelong student of history, literature, botany, and art. She read widely, took classes at the Women's Institute of Houston, and loved planning her next trip to the great museums of the world. She would surprise her family with themed birthday parties and spur-of-the-moment road trips to explore her favorite parts of Texas. She believed in living a very full and beautiful life.
Elaine had many wonderful friends, including Debby Leven, whom she loved like a sister and who was always there for Elaine. Elaine's family would also like to thank her doctor, Dr. Alfred Yung, and his assistants, Eva Lu Lee and Tamu Abreu, for all of their compassion and support.
There will be a private memorial service for Elaine at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Various Donors - Department of Neuro-Oncology, c/o Dr. Alfred Yung, P.O. Box 301402 - Unit 431, Houston, Texas 77230-1402, or to Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park, which was one of Elaine's favorite places. Donations should be sent to: WOBSPA, P.O. Box 1, Washington, TX, 77880.
