Mariell Hughes
Archer, age 67, passed away on July 22, 2014, at her home in Houston, Texas. Mariell was born December 6, 1946, in Shreveport, Louisiana, the firstborn of John Raymond Hughes, Jr. and Mary Margaret (Peggy) Heaton Hughes.
Mariell grew up in Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri, with her family finally settling in Texas. When she was young, she loved fishing and camping with her parents, brother John Raymond (Bubba) Hughes III, and her sister Margaret Anne Hughes James. Mariell graduated Magna Cum Laude from Dulles High School in 1965 and then received her BS degree with Summa Cum Laude from the University Houston-Downtown. Throughout her career, she worked as a radiology technician and other medical related roles.
In 1968, Mariell was introduced to Larry Lee Archer on a blind date set up by a friend. They were married on November 29, 1969, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Together they had three children John Raymond, Jason Harry and Jennifer LeAnn.
Mariell was a faithful Christian who, along with her husband, was a member of First Baptist Church of Houston where they taught preschool Sunday School for many years. Mariell sang in the choir, performing in Christmas pageants and international choir trips.
Mariell was a loving, generous and thoughtful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She also loved to play piano, Scrabble, card games and puzzles.
Mariell is preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Peggy and her brother Bubba. She is survived by her husband, Larry; sister Margaret Anne; children John (Kimberly Murdock), Jason (Julie Warren Archer) and Jennifer (Robert Gruver); grandchildren Kasey, Allyson, Olivia, Cameron, Harrison, Patrick and Jasmine and countless cousins and close friends.
Services will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079 at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 1. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to or Flags for Fallen Vets - Houston.
