Harold Brown
September 17, 1917 -
August 14, 2014
The final chapter in the life of Harold Brown came to an end on August 14, 2014. Born in 1917 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he attended Harvard University and Harvard Medical School. He served in the U.S Army Medical Corps in Europe during the latter part of WWII.
His career in academic medicine spanned four decades as a teacher, researcher, and administrator. Early years were spent at the University of Utah Medical School in Salt Lake City, and the largest segment of his career was at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Appointments as Visiting Professor also brought him to Thailand, China, and Colombia.
After retirement, Harold and his wife Norma, who died in 2012, resettled in Santa Fe. They lived for ten years in the Sunlit Hills area and spent their final years at El Castillo. Their love of travel and interest in other cultures carried them to every continent with the exception of Antarctica. Harold was an active member of a reading group and gave generously of his time in many capacities. He was an Ombudsman for the NM Agency on Aging and a tax aide for AARP. Other organizations for which he worked included the El Castillo Residents Association, the Unitarian Church, the U.S./China People's Friendship Association, and the Council on International Relations. His was a life well lived. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Harold is survived by his four children: Leigh Brown Jacobs (New York), David Brown (Vermont), Beth Simpson (New Mexico), Jack Brown (Texas), and their families.
Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Santa Fe Community Foundation at 501 Halona Street, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87505.
