Richard Kay Obituary
Richard E. Kay, (74) longtime west side Houston resident, died at home on Tuesday, January 24th, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born July 23, 1937 in Youngstown, Ohio, Dick graduated from what was then known as Youngstown University with a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree in 1962. Married to the former Patricia Sfara in 1958, he and his family lived in many places over the years, including upstate New York, southern California, northern Alabama, Sweden, and for the past 40+ years, in Houston.
Dick is survived by his wife, Pat; his children: daughter Kim Howard and husband Mike, son Richard (Sandy) Kay, and daughter Shelley Kay and partner Peggy Vining; his grandchildren Kaylee Howard, Ryan Kay, and Christopher Howard; his brothers Jim and wife Bev, Tom and wife Kay, John and wife Theresa, and Russ; his sister Susan Kay Ardale and husband Ed; sisters-in-law Gerri Paulicivic and husband Joe, Margaret Ford and husband Ange, and Norma Johnson and husband George; twenty-one nieces and nephews and many friends.
Dick began his working life in Huntsville, Alabama as a programmer trainee with General Electric during the heyday of the space program in the early sixties. He remained in the computer industry, working for such companies as Computer Science Corporation, Xerox Data Systems, TRW Controls, Superior Oil Company, UNISYS, and Candle Corporation. Until his retirement at sixty-eight, he continued to work for Candle Corporation and BMC Software as a contract employee.
A generous and caring man, Dick was above all a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. His family was more important to him than anything else in the world, and the way he lived his life reflected that. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest that remembrances take the form of a donation to Houston Hospice by mail to 1905 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX 77030; online at www.houstonhospice.org; or by phone at 713-677-7119.
A memorial celebration of Dick's life will take place from 4 - 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 28th at the family home. For further information, e-mail patricia@patriciakay.com.
Memorial tributes and/or condolences to the family may be made at the website of his wife: www.patriciakay.com/dick.
