Shirah Lanelle May Hall, age 66, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Shirah is survived by her husband of 45 years, Wayne Hall; her son, Seth Hall, and wife Dana; son, Ryan Hall, and wife Jennifer; grandsons, Hank, Wes and Luke Hall; and daughter, Vonda Segler and husband Robbie; granddaughters, Victoria and Tristin Segler; grandson, Roark Segler; sister, Deanna Burnett and nephews, Michael, Trent, Scott and Kevin.
Shirah is also survived by many friends, including a very special group of long time friends referred to as the "The Linen Cloth Society." This group, including the Rules, Greens, Looneys and the Kinches were very important to her over the last 40-plus years. Annual gatherings included golf, swimming, visiting and eating. Shirah often remarked how lucky she and Wayne were to enjoy these lifetime friendships.
A native Houstonian, Shirah was born on September 6, 1946 to Victoria Louise Crosby May and Oran Dean May. She attended Jesse H. Jones High School ('65) and the University of Texas Dental Hygiene School ('67).
Shirah's life was devoted to her family. She always made sure that family birthdays were remembered with a lunch preparing the favorite dishes of the birthday celebrant. Family dinners and get-togethers were very important to Shirah. She always remarked that the most beautiful sound in the world was the laughter and conversation in the house at those celebrations. It was "Music to her Ears".
Shirah possessed a passion for her dental hygiene profession and was a loyal employee to Dr. Alfred Goodman for more than 38 years. Shirah's patients were like family to her. She was known for seeing patients in public and teasing them about their flossing habits, which always delivered a big laugh. Her upbeat personality, kind sense of humor and warm smile drew others to her. Shirah touched many lives with her positive lessons and guidance. She will continue to influence all who had the good fortune to know her.
An avid traveler, Shirah found great joy in spending time abroad with her family. Together, Shirah and Wayne visited a number of countries during their years together. Europe was a favorite destination of Shirah's and she was especially fond of her experiences in France. Shirah loved to share memories from her travels and was always known to bring back a special memento that perfectly captured each trip.
Shirah was the "glue" and the constant to her family. She was the matriarch of the family and was very much loved by all. Though loved and missed by family and friends, Shirah's lessons and guidance will continue to influence all who had the good fortune to know her.
A memorial service will be held for Shirah at Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee at Sam Houston Tollway, Houston, Texas 77042 at 1:30 PM on Friday, February 15, 2013, with the service being conducted by Dr. Mike Fry, Congregational Care Pastor at Grace. Those wishing to send flowers should send them to Grace Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to UT Health, School of Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, P.O. Box 203366, Houston, TX 77216-3366 with the memo line "In Memory of Shirah Hall - Financial Aid".
