George Gilbert Obituary
George K. Gilbert, Jr. passed away at home on Friday, June 7, 2013 after losing a courageous battle with melanoma cancer. He was born on November 1, 1939 in Shreveport, Louisiana to George Killgore and Ethel Beall Gilbert. George graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport and from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He earned his Master of Business Administration from Loyola University in New Orleans. At Louisiana Tech, George was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and it was there that he met his future life mate that resulted in 50+ years of marriage.
During George's 37 year career in the oil and gas industry he began his work for Shell Oil Co. in New Orleans and then moved to Houston. In 1979 he became Controller at Damson Oil Corporation and in 1982 he moved to Superior Oil Company. George joined Standard Oil as Assistant Controller of U.S. E&P and in 1989 he was named Controller for Tex/Con Corporation, a subsidiary of BP. George completed his career with BP from 1992 to 2000 managing BP's U.S. oil and gas divestitures. George served his country in the Louisiana Air National Guard from 1963 to his honorable discharge in 1969. He was active in the oil and gas accounting committee of the API, serving as its President in 1981-82. He was also a member of the Houston Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute. Following retirement, he was active in numerous charities and fundraisers.
George is survived by his wife, Edna Ruth Moncrief Gilbert, their children George and Julie Bopp Gilbert and Sam and Catherine Gilbert Susser and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Janie Axton, her husband, Jon, and children.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 10:00 am at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 5830 Bermuda Dunes, Houston, Texas, 77069. A reception will be held after the service in the Welcome Center. Graveside services will be held on July 1, 2013, at 10:00 am at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston, Louisiana.
