passed away peacefully on June 29, 2013, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was 71 years young! Melva Jo was born in San Antonio on October 29, 1941. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bunny and Woody Cox. She is survived by her son, Glen Vick Brown of Houston; brother, Phil Cox and wife, Lindsey of Columbus; niece, Heather Bryant and husband, John and nephews, Mark Cox, and Steve Cox and wife, Lisa.
Having spent her early school years in Oak Wood, she moved to Bryan in the 9th grade, graduating from S.F.A High School in 1960. Mel then went on to earn a degree in education in 1964 from North Texas State University. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She had a passion for teaching children to read, which exemplified her career as an elementary school teacher for 25 years. The majority of her teaching career was in Houston. After retiring from teaching, Mel joined Continental Airlines as a flight attendant for 12 years. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling with girlfriends.
A time for visitation will be on Monday, July 1, 2013 from 5:00pm to 7:00 pm at Hillier Funeral Home, 2301 E. 29th Street in Bryan. A celebration of Melva Jo's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 also at the funeral home. A family graveside service at Bryan City Cemetery will precede the services.
