Robert Dean Obituary
Robert Franklin "Bob" Dean, an icon in the Texas insurance industry and a pillar of the Houston community, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 15, 2013 in Houston. Bob was born in Houston, Texas in 1942 to the late Claude Nathan Dean and Nellie Gladis Dean. Commonly known as "one of the good guys," his praiseworthy life and unexpected passing will undoubtedly leave an indelible impression on the many lives he touched in his personal and professional circles. Bob was an adoring husband and father. He was passionate about quality family time, as well as RV trips, UH tailgating and Texas country music. He also had a big heart for the community. He was an active, supporting member of the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church for more than 20 years. Bob was cherished by family, friends, clients and colleagues, and the family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love, shared memories and kind thoughts.
Bob earned his Bachelors Degree at the University of Houston, and set out to change the world of insurance, taking measured risks and trusting his sharp business instincts. As Founder, President and CEO of Dean & Draper Insurance Agency, he has been "Insuring the Growth of Texas" for 33 years. He was a master of insurance, financial management, budgeting and human resource management, and he ran a fair and prosperous business that served the best interests of his employees, clients and associates. What started as a two-man operation in 1980 thrived on Bob's astute business acumen and a dedication to organic growth, as well as savvy acquisitions. His commitment to developing successful, well-rounded insurance agents extended to the realm of education where he served as Co-founder and Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Insurance Risk Management degree at the University of Houston Downtown.
Today, Dean & Draper is a National Top 100 Agency, employing 150 people in Houston and its surrounding areas, many of whom praise Bob's kind heart, warm smile and genuine spirit. Industry accolades over the years include Houston Business Journal's third largest individually owned Houston insurance agency and Texas Monthly's Top 100 Places to Work, among many others. In addition, Bob served as Director for the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas and Houston. His legacy of integrity, innovation and compassion will live on in the hearts of many.
In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Dean; half-sister, June Lynch; son Robert Franklin "Bobby" Dean, Jr; and wife, Betsy Ellen Dean.
