Steven Wales Obituary
Steven John Wales (aka Stevie, Dad, and Poppy), lover of family, friends, Golden Retrievers, rescue cats, France, history, good coffee, politics, and sharp debate, died Sunday, July 28, 2013. Steve leaves behind many who love him: wife, companion, and best friend for 32 years, Dr. Peggy Landrum; son Erich Landrum of Australia; daughter Shannon Sullwold of Houston; brother Linwood Kenny Wales of Houston; sisters-in-law Suzanne T. Wales and Vicki L. Gilliland; niece Megan Morris; grandchildren Samuel and Vanessa Mackiewicz, and Abigail Velasquez; adopted French family Sylvie & Co; and many amazing friends, furry and otherwise.
Steve's love and support for those close to him was unrelenting, with constant encouragement to pursue dreams, face challenges, and enjoy successes. He was a good friend to his friends and at his best when he was helping someone. He cherished the time he spent with Bill W's friends, and with all those he mentored. Steve was known for his huge heart and generosity, as well as his delightfully dry sense of humor that was matched by few. A voracious reader and accomplished traveler, he was also a true news junkie who loved any political debate; Steve would take on anyone anytime, just for fun. He was committed to conservative economic principles and political incorrectness, and also loved his friends who were not. In recent times, Steve's fighting spirit, perseverance, and tenacity amazed and inspired so many. Of his many pleasures in life, Steve most treasured his family; he encouraged and stood by us all with dedication and fierce loyalty. By knowing and loving him, we have been changed for good. We will miss Steve terribly but will carry him forever in our hearts.
Steve was born in 1941 in Fall River, MA and became an accomplished scholar with degrees from Babson Institute and Harvard Business School, where he was a Wall Street Journal Scholar. Following academic and extracurricular commendation, he followed the energy and finance business to Houston via Colorado in 1970 and quickly proclaimed himself a Texan. Steve was an active volunteer with Rotary Club of Houston, The Gathering Place, and The Men's Center. Steve is preceded in death by his parents Linwood O. and Katherine Lowney Wales; sister Katie Wales; and mother-in-law Margaret Landrum.
Donations in memory of Steve may go to The Men's Center Houston, (713) 524-3682 or to Forgotten Pets, (281) 835-4445 or to a favorite helping organization in Steve's name. A Celebration of Life for Steve will be on Saturday, September 7, 3pm at Rothko Chapel. A gathering of friends will follow, with details available at the service.
