Billy Hargis Obituary
Billy James
Hargis II, beloved son, father, uncle, and friend, died Sunday, September 8, 2013 in Houston, TX.
Billy came into this world in a big way on July 28, 1954, as an 11-pound baby born to Betty Jane and Billy James Hargis of Tulsa, OK. At Edison High School in Tulsa, he was an active thespian and served as the 1972 Senior Class President. Billy attended American Christian College and as a member of the college choir "The All American Kids" entertained audiences across the country. In 1978 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from The University of Tulsa. Billy felt his greatest education came from traveling the world with his father as he preached the word of God.
He was General Manager of Christian radio station KDLF in Port Arthur, TX, and a frequent contributor to the Christian Crusade newspaper. He appeared in national and regional TV commercials and shows, was featured in print and billboard advertising, and even graced a Blue Bell Ice Cream Bar box, clad as a police officer. Billy sang with Houston Grand Opera and was active in "Opera to Go," HGO's school outreach program. He also sang lead roles with the Houston Gilbert and Sullivan Society and traveled with them to England. While in Port Arthur, he was active with the Beaumont Civic Opera, Beaumont Community Players, and Port Arthur Little Theater, performing many leading roles. Following his father's death in 2004, Billy assumed management of the Christian Crusade ministry.
Billy remained a student of the Scriptures throughout his life. He shared his love for God through his extraordinary gift of song, writing and recording many albums. He loved leading the congregational singing and singing in the choir at Houston's First United Methodist Church, where he enthusiastically encouraged the hymn singing "just one more time!!" His voice was a true gift from God and blessed, comforted, and inspired so many throughout his life.
Billy was proud of his son, Billy James Hargis III, and step-daughter, Mary Olivia Macgowan, and enjoyed sharing his love of travel, books, film, music, and laughter. He passionately followed current events and world politics. From his youth he was an avid collector of rare comic books, original cartoon illustrations, and pop culture.
Billy was preceded in death by his father, Billy James Hargis, and his brother, Bryan Joseph Hargis. He is survived by his mother, Betty Jane Hargis; his son, Billy James Hargis III, and step-daughter, Mary Olivia Macgowan, and their mother, Lucy Cain Hargis; his sisters and husbands, Bonnie Jane and Pierre Choisnard, Becky Jean and Jack Frank, and Brenda Jo and Joe Epperley; plus seven nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1320 Main Street, Houston, TX, with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall. The family requests any memorial gifts be given to First United Methodist Church, Music Ministry, or a .
