Evelyn Benton Obituary
Evelyn Fleming
Benton, a longtime resident of Houston, TX, passed away peacefully at age 92 on October 29, 2013, in Austin, TX. Wife of the late Douglas C. Benton, she is survived by her two sons, Christopher Paul Benton and Walter Bradford Benton, as well as three grandchildren, Ethan, Kai, and Luna. Evelyn received a BFA in music from Oklahoma State University and later studied library science at the University of Texas in Austin. She worked for several years as assistant librarian at Lee College in Baytown, TX, and in 1967 she was asked by the city of Deer Park, TX, to develop their fledgling city library. She retired from there 16 years later, and during retirement, she frequently did volunteer work in church and institutional libraries. She was a bright and cheerful person with avid interests in music and genealogy, and she reveled in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew her. A private family gathering will take place in memory of her life.
