Flato went home to be with the Lord on January 22, 2014, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Dorothy grew up in Houston in a tight knit family. In fourth grade, she began a lifelong love of St. Thomas' Episcopal School, gaining many friends as a student (earning 'Straight A's' from fourth through twelfth grades), graduate (as Valedictorian of the Class of 1979) and later a parent and a teacher there.
While at St. Thomas', she participated in competitive Highland Dancing in Scotland. Dorothy earned a degree in Accounting at The University of Texas at Austin, graduating cum laude, while taking part in Spooks, numerous honor societies, intramural sports and pledging Alpha Phi sorority. Upon graduation, Dorothy joined Ernst & Young as a CPA in audit, successfully serving a variety of clients, bonding with her audit teams, and rising to the role of Audit Manager. She continued her career at U.S. Physical Therapy as corporate secretary.
Though she enjoyed her work, Dorothy was most devoted to her husband John and her three children, Andrew, Nicholas and Katherine. There was always time for games of ping-pong, bicycle rides, swimming, sailing, the beach and impromptu get togethers with friends and neighbors. Following the birth of Katie, Dorothy joined the staff at St. Thomas' Episcopal; there she taught several grades, her last being 6th Grade Boys and Girls math. She was active in the community as well, volunteering for Junior League of Houston, the Maplewood Marlins Swim Team, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Westbury Little League, Southwest Football League, Alpha Phi Alumnae, Ladies of Lymbar 'Book Club' and many others.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, John Ware Nagle and mother Elizabeth Geraldine Nagle. She is lovingly remembered by her husband John, children Andrew, Nicholas and Katherine, sisters Nancy (Sandy) Zinsmeister and Lucile (Scott) Record, in-laws Virginia (Jim) Joplin, Edwin (Lydia) Flato, Franklin (Claudia) Flato and Monica (David) Etter, stepmother Darlene Nagle, and nieces and nephews William Zinsmeister, John Zinsmeister, Elizabeth Record, Hannah Record, Grace Flato, William Flato and Andrew Etter.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held at 7:00pm, Friday, January 24 at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 4900 Jackwood, Houston, with a reception following in the Murray Center. Graveside Service will be at 1:30pm, Saturday, January 25 at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Flato Family Benefit c/o Spirit of Texas Bank (www.spiritoftexasbank.com) for the children's education, or to St. Thomas' Episcopal School, 4900 Jackwood, Houston, Texas 77096.
