Howard Ackley Clunn joined his beloved wife, June in Heaven on April 9, 2014 after a brief illness with cancer. He was born August 14, 1924 in Millville, New Jersey to the late Edith Ackley Clunn and Floyd Clunn.|
Howard was a graduate of Northwestern University majoring in Civil Engineering. He was commissioned in the Civil Engineering Corp of the Navy. In 1947, after serving in the Navy, Howard began a long and distinguished career with Turner Construction Company. He loved his career with Turner and ultimately was Chief Estimator of the company. One of his favorite building projects was the Second Pan American Union Building in Washington, D.C. He traveled extensively for Turner and some of his favorite places were England, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan.
He met the love of his life, June Smith, at The John Barleycorn pub in New York City and they spent thirty-seven wonderful years together. Together they built a life which took them from Connecticut to Denver to California. Together they designed and built their home at Lake of the Pines where they both became lifetime members of the LOP tennis club. Howard was active at the LOP Clubhouse being involved for years in their Follies, Christmas decorating, and tennis.
Howard loved the outdoors and he started a weekly hiking club with a few fellow hikers, which developed into the Wanderlust Hiking Club. By the time he retired from the group ten years later, it had over 40 members and is still going strong. His last vacation was to Yellowstone National Park in 2013.
After June's passing in February 2010, Howard moved to The Terrace at Buffalo Speedway to be close to his family. He was an active member at The Terrace and enjoyed their weekly trips, exercise, and art classes and made many good friendships.
Howard is survived by two sons, Steve and fiancée Audrey Martin, Jeff and his wife Stephanie; granddaughters, Sara, Sloan, Rachel, Catherine, Lauren, Kylee, Cara; great-grandson, Brandon; brother, Henry of Ohio; many nieces, nephews and scores of friends.
We will all miss Howard's beautiful smile, kind words, hearty laugh and generous spirit.
