Winifred Catlin Obituary

Winifred Catlin
1923-2017
Winifred Esther Jacobson Catlin, a gentle, warm, and compassionate sweetheart, known to many as "Dede", died peacefully at the Houston Hospice on Sunday, the 28th of May 2017.
She was born in Wheat Ridge, Colorado on the 20th of October 1923, the daughter of Clarence Raymond Jacobson and Laura Esther Moles.
Dede attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where she received her Bachelors of Science degree in Microbiology, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She then received her Masters of Science degree at Yale University. She worked in the chemotherapy department at Sloan Kettering Institute where she met Robert James Catlin, who worked in an adjoining department. They married on the 27th of December 1950.
In 1973 Dede and her family moved abroad to Vienna, Austria for a four-year period, during which she was actively involved in the International Women's Guild and travelled widely. Dede loved to travel, and organized trips for the family to destinations throughout the globe. Upon moving to Houston in the mid-nineties, Dede became very active at Bayou Bend as a docent. Her favorite activities were reading and travel. Her greatest loves were her husband, her children and her grandchildren. Dede was happiest when visiting with her children.
Dede is survived by her husband of 66 years, Robert James Catlin of Houston, Texas; son, James Hunter Catlin and wife Jennifer of Trappe, Maryland; two daughters: Christine Carroll Catlin Linn of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Mary Lavina Evans Catlin of San Francisco, California. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Callista Rose Catlin and Lillian Jade Catlin, daughters of James and Jennifer Catlin. She is also survived by her sisters: Ruth "Twink" Marianne Jacobson Stevens and Jeanette Jacobson Hill, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Warren Jacobson, and her sister, Evelyn Jacobson Wheeler.
A Service of Thanksgiving is to be conducted at twelve o'clock noon on Saturday, the 24th of June 2017 at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 345 Piney Point Road in Houston, where the Rev. Stuart Bates is to officiate.
A private family interment in Church Hill, Maryland is to be conducted at a later date.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Francis Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.
