George W. Zimmerman(1924 - 2013)

Zimmerman, George W.

George William Zimmerman, age 88, of Manitowoc, completed his earthly journey on Monday, September 2, 2013 and entered into the gift of eternal life.

Born in Portage, WI on November 23, 1924, George graduated from Portage High School in June, 1942. He entered UW Stout that same year and joined the U.S. Navy a year later. He worked on aviation radar in the south Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1946. On June 21, 1947, he married Dorothy Schoenwald at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Manitowoc.

He returned to Stout and graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Education in 1949 and received his Master's Degree in 1951.

After graduation he taught high school Industrial Arts in Siren and Valders, WI. He worked for Hamilton Mfg. from 1952-1961 and for Eggers Plywood for seven years after that. He later became the Trade and Industrial Coordinator for Lakeshore Technical College and served in that capacity for 14 years. He retired from LTC in 1987.

George was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Golden K Kiwanis, Manitowoc County Historical Society, and Retired Educator's Association, where he served diligently in leadership and chairmanship capacities. He also held membership in many organizations including the American Legion Post 88, Conservation Education, the Maritime Museum, and the Capitol Civic Centre.

He was an accomplished craftsman and woodworker who also thoroughly enjoyed music, the arts, and travel.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy and three children: Reid (Lori) Zimmerman of Pine City, MN; Lyn (Gary) Meyer of Worthington, OH; and Lori (Lee) Liverance of Iron Mountain, MI. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, two great-grandsons, two sisters: Idella Anacker of Portage, WI, Janice (John R.) Mittelstaedt of Pardeeville, WI, and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George William Zimmerman, Sr. and Florence Idella (Bublitz) Zimmerman of Portage, WI, brother-in-law, Donald Anacker and a nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1712 Menasha Ave. Manitowoc. Rev Zachary DeArmond will officiate. Military services will be accorded by American Legion Drews-Bleser Post #88. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 5:30 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00p.m. Entombment will take place at Knollwood Mausoleum. Jens Family Funeral home & Crematory is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church or a charity of your choosing.
