Deffke, Donald R.

Donald R. Deffke, 90, of Brillion died Sat. July 12, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. He was born in Collins, WI on Feb. 6, 1924, the son of the late Elmer and Evelyn (Mattes) Deffke.

Donald married Dorothy Jochmann on May 23, 1942 in New Holstein. She preceded him in death on Feb. 23, 2014. The couple was married for 71 years.

During World War II, Donald served in the US Navy on the LST 839 in the Pacific Theater. He was proud of his military service and was a 60 year member of the Bloedorn-Becker-Jensen American Legion Post #126, where he served as past commander and the Voiture 40 et 8. He and Dorothy also attended many of his ship reunions throughout the country.

For many years, he was the manager and cheesemaker for the School Grove Dairy in Forest Junction. He was well known for his award winning cheese curds and cheddar cheese.

He was an active member of the Peace United Church of Christ, where he was a past church council president. Don enjoyed playing Sheepshead, polka dancing, bowling, and feeding the birds. For years he drove for the area Amish families.

Donald was a loving husband, and a wonderful dad and grandpa. His sunny disposition won the hearts of many.

Survivors include his children: Carol Mae of Long Boat Key, FL, Barbara (Dennis) Kesler of Chilton, and Thomas (Kathleen) Deffke of Shorewood, WI; 7 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He also leaves his Amish friends, who have become his extended family, his nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister Elaine Krueger.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Peace UCC (489 S. Glenview) in Brillion with the Rev. Kris Borns officiating. Burial will be in the Brillion Community Cemetery. Friends may call at Peace UCC from 4:00 pm until 6:30 pm on Friday, July 18, 2014 and on Saturday at the church from 10:00 am until 10:45 am.

Donald's family would like to thank county nurse, Carol Pritzl and the entire staff of Century Ridge for all of the wonderful care that was given to Donald. They would also like to thank Rev. Kris Borns for the prayers and visits as well as Donald's grandchild, Kristin Bushman for lovingly watching over her grandpa during the past several months.
