Hunsader, Donald James "Jim'
Donald James "Jim" Hunsader, 85, died on Aug. 17, 2013, at home, surrounded by his family.
Jim was born in 1928 in Alaska, WI, into a dairy farming family. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, and in 1957, he married Constance Mary Derus at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manitowoc. In 1967, he and two of his brothers, the late Robert and Paul Hunsader, moved their families to Bradenton and founded what is now Hunsader Farms.
Jim was a quiet man who dedicated his life to farming and family. He retired from full-time farming in 1990, but since that time has enjoyed helping his wife and children with the annual Hunsader Farms Pumpkin Festival. Prior to each event, he served as scarecrow "engineer"; during the event, he could be seen riding around the grounds in "Papa's Cart". On August 4th he celebrated his 85th birthday with his children and grandchildren. Jim's hobby was helping out at the farm market by picking strawberries and vegetables and doing handyman jobs. He enjoyed spending part of each summer in the northeast Georgia Mountains. Jim was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul the Apostles Catholic Church, and was co-owner of Harllee Packing.
Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years, Connie; their five children, Cathy (the late Mark) Raye, Michael (Tricia) Hunsader, Linda (Tim) Hunsader, Mary Jo (Jim) Baar, and David (Kim) Hunsader all of Bradenton; and four of his nine siblings, Dona (Clarence) Shimon and Lenore (Chuck) Christel both of Manitowoc, WI; Jean Lewis of Elkhorn, WI; and Paul (Janice) Hunsader of Bradenton. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Barbara Hunsader; brothers, Mark and Robert Hunsader; and sisters, Mabel Tienor, Dorothy Zik, and Ruth Holsen.
Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. on Friday, August 23, 2013, at Shannon Funeral Home Westview Chapel, 5610 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at Ss. Peter & Paul the Apostles Catholic Church, 2850 75th St. W., Bradenton.
