Alecksen, Specialist Erica Paige

Specialist Erica Paige Alecksen, a military police officer attached to the 978th Military Police Brigade at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, was killed in action on Monday, July 9, in the Wardak province of Afghanistan. SPC Alecksen and five of her fellow MPs lost their lives when their MRAP (mine resistant-ambush protected) vehicle encountered a large IED (improvised explosive device).

Erica's remains were welcomed back to U.S. soil at 4 a.m. July 12, at a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force base in Dover, Del.

Erica was a 2009 graduate of Putnam County High School in Eatonton, Ga. and a soldier in the United States Army since March, 2010.

Erica is survived by her husband, Timothy Bailey, Eatonton, Ga.; her father, Lars Alecksen, mother Doria Alecksen and brother, Charles Alecksen, Eatonton, Ga.; maternal grandparents, Harold and Maurine Huggins, Eatonton, Ga.; paternal grandparents, Richard and Betty Alecksen, Manitowoc, Wis.; four maternal aunts and one maternal uncle; paternal aunt, April (Alecksen) Miller, Holmen, Wis.; and paternal uncle, Tove Alecksen, Manitowoc, Wis.

Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Eatonton, Ga., on Wednesday, July 18.
