Bartkowiak, Jakub J.

Jakub J. Bartkowiak, age 93, passed away on December 27, 2012 at The Renaissance in Marinette where he was a resident. He was born on September 6, 1919 in Poland, son of the late Marcin and Anna (Brzakowska) Bartkowiak. As a young man Jakub was an amature boxer in Poland. In 1939 he joined the Polish Military and was captured by the German's shortly thereafter and sent to the P.O.W. Labor Camp. It was there in the prison camp that he met his future wife Maria Wasilewski.

After the war he worked in Germany for five years. Because of his honesty, integrity, math skills and the ability to speak Polish, German and Russian, he was appointed to the position of Deputy to the Chief Administrator for the International Refuge Organization in charge of food ration cards. On July 7, 1945 he married Maria and they stayed in a displaced person camp in Germany. In 1949 they immigrated to the U.S. and settled in the Marinette area. He was formerly employed by Unit Structures and Anusl Co. from which he retired in 1984. Jakub was a skilled carpenter, woodworker and a true gentleman.

He was a wonderful Father, Grandfather & Great-Grandfather. Jakub is survived by, 2 sons, Arthur (Mary) of Brookfield, WI. and Robert of Marquette, MI.

3 daughters, Lucyna Welnetz of Two Rivers, Susana (Jim) Lacy of Waukesha, and Janet Clausen of Menominee, MI. 7 Grand-children, Ginny, Carrie, Rachel, Richard, Laura, Paige and Ty. Also survived by his special dog, Misha. Jakub was preceded in death by his parents, his wife,8 brothers and 5 sisters.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 2, at Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home (331 S. Ellis Ave. Peshtigo) from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Visitation continues on Thursday morning at St. Mary Catholic Church (171 S. Wood Ave.) from 10:00 am until time of services at 11:00 am.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Peshtigo.

The family would like to thank The Renaissance for the wonderful loving care given to Jakub.
