LaVerne R. Hartl, age 87, a lifelong resident of Manitowoc, entered into eternal life with her family at her side on Saturday, May 4, 2013.
LaVerne was born on January 18, 1926 in Manitowoc to the late Florian and Myrtle Krueger Kortas. On April 16, 1947, LaVerne married John Hartl at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on November 1, 1985. LaVerne dedicated herself to improving the city she loved through volunteerism. She served on the boards of many civic and charitable organizations including the Rahr West Art Museum, the Manitowoc Public Library, the Manitowoc Citizens Advisory Committee, the Manitowoc Police Crime Prevention Committee, the Lincoln Park Zoological Society, the Junior Service League, and the Zonta Club of Manitowoc. In 2008, LaVerne was recognized for her lifetime of service when she received an official commendation from the Manitowoc City Council. LaVerne enjoyed spending her time raising, breeding and showing champion English Bulldogs. She also took pride in her gardening and was a certified Master Gardener. LaVerne was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Manitowoc.
Survivors include LaVerne's son, Terry (MaryAnn) Hartl, Gurnee, IL, other relatives, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, John.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Richard Klingeisen with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 from 4 p.m. until the time of the prayer service led by Deacon Paul Kieffer at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue on Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Following the services at church, a luncheon will be held at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home.
