Nelson, Norbert W.

Norbert W. Nelson age 87, of 3512 MacArthur Drive, Manitowoc died Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Aurora Medical Center of Manitowoc County.

Norbert was born September 10, 1925, in the Town of Gibson, son of the late George and Alfreida (Berglin) Nelson. He attended elementary school in the town of Denmark, Brown Co. until moving to Manitowoc in 1937. Norbert attended First German Ev. Lutheran Church and graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School in 1943. Norbert then enlisted in the Army Air Corp in August of 1943. After attending many service schools he was appointed Flight Officer Bombardier. After military service, he attended the University of Wisconsin for two years before joining the Manitowoc Police Department as Patrolman on December 29, 1947. Norbert married Alice Carstens on September 4, 1948 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church at Newtonburg. Alice preceded Norbert in death on November 16, 2012. While with the M.P.D. he belonged to the Wisconsin Professional Police Assoc., was a Board Director for 22 years and chairman of the State Pistol Tournament, a member of the M.P.D. Pistol Team for over 50 years, continuing after retirement, a member and director of Maritime Credit Union, member of American Legion Drews-Bleser Post #88 of Manitowoc, holding many officer positions including Post Commander, and was Parade Marshall for 30 years. Within the M.P.D., Norbert was promoted to Detective on July 1, 1985 and then to Detective Sgt. on February 1, 1985 before retiring on December 31, 1985. He belonged to Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church and served on the church council and as church secretary for several years.

Survivors include his daughter: Barbara Nelson Nasto, Green Bay, and special friend, Randy Haupt, Manitowoc; one daughter-in-law: Carol Nelson, Manitowoc; four grandchildren: Abby (Corey) Janssen, West Bend, and their children, Ian, Meredith, Georgia, and Wade Janssen, West Bend; Barry Nelson, Spring Lake, NC.; Desiree Nasto, Green Bay; Zachary Nasto, Green Bay; one sister: Nadine Webster, Appleton; one sister-in-law and one brother-in-law: Virginia (Helmer) Hanson, Green Bay. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: George and Alfreida Nelson; his wife: Alice Nelson; one son: Dennis Nelson; one sister, three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law: Lorraine (Gary) Schnitz, George Webster, and Leonard (Marie) Carstens.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3209 Meadow Lane, Manitowoc. The Rev. Robert Kujawski and Rev. Stephen Melso will officiate. Military rites will be honored at the church by American Legion Drews-Bleser Post #88 with Entombment to follow at the Knollwood Mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. at church. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the Nelson family.
