Alice Mielcarek

Alice Mielcarek, age 81, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011.

She was born on March 25, 1930, in Manitowoc, the daughter of William and Milda (Jonas) Rhode. Alice married Francis "Oscar" Mielcarek on Aug. 30, 1960. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Manitowoc in 1948. After high school, she attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated with her bachelor of science degree in 1953, and later received her masters degree. Alice taught english and speech in Gladstone, Mich. from 1953 until 1955, then at Wisconsin High, in Madison, from 1958 until 1963, and lastly at Madison East High School from 1963 until her retirement as head of the English department in 1989. She loved gardening and sewing, especially quilting. Alice was an avid golfer and UW sports fan.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Dolores Furnari; nieces and nephews, John and Joan Robertson, Tom and Agnes Robertson, Richard Robertson, Tim and Beth Mielcarek, and Wayne and Kathy (Mielcarek) Viner; many other special nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar in 2004.

Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
