On October 3, 1951 John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was discharged in September of 1953 as a Corporal. He married the former Joann Schadeberg on July 16, 1955 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manitowoc. John was employed with Julias Wergin as a painter and then the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company for 22 years as a paint foreman and supervisor. He was a member and past president of the Painters' Local Union. An avid history buff, John was a member of the Manitowoc County Civil War Round Table, Manitowoc Historical Society, Friends of St. Patrick's, Two Rivers Historical Society, and the Manitowoc Maritime Museum. John had so many passions and interests that it would be impossible to list them all. He loved nature, spending time with people, and being outdoors.
