Scott Kress Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 23 to Jul. 25, 2014.

Kress, Scott

Scott M. Kress, age 54, Manitowoc, WI, formerly of Green Bay, passed away unexpectedly on July 20, 2014. He was born on February 5, 1960 to Allan and Judy (Sokolowski) Kress in Racine WI. Scott attended Homestead High School in Mequon, WI, graduated from Bay Port High School in Green Bay, WI and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Scott was creative and successful in starting his own business, working in healthcare and retail before achieving the dream of his life -- teaching. He formerly worked at Syble Hopp School in DePere and was currently teaching in the Manitowoc School District. Scott cherished each day with the staff and students he worked with. As a further testament of his love, Scott took two young boys in via foster care, adopted them as his own and helped raise them into young men. Joey and Mick looked up to him for strength, guidance and humor.

Scott's great love of animals was always apparent. He smothered the dogs he cared for with kisses and treats. Our dogs Buster and Buddy were always eager for Scott to show up with a treat as they welcomed him back home. His kind spirit, warm heart and giving nature were apparent to all.

Scott is survived by his sons, Joseph (Joey) Kress and Mick DeGrand; his longtime friend, Mike DeGrand with whom Scott raised the boys; granddaughter, Valerie Jane DeGrand; his parents, Allan and Judy Kress (North Branch, MN); brothers, Mike and Renee Kress (Burlington, No. Carolina), Jon and Shannon Kress (Phillips, WI), and Andy and Tracy Kress (North Branch, MN); nieces and nephews, Savannah (Greg) Stevenson, Hillary Kress, Lyndsie Kress, Jacob Kress, Nicklaus Kress, Emilee Kress, and Allison Kress. He is further survived by our dogs, Buster and Buddy and cat, Lulu. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, coworkers and students.

Visitation at Malcore (East) Funeral Home, 701 N. Baird Street, Green Bay, Saturday, July 26th, from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the funeral at 11:00 A.M. with Scott's friend, Rabbi Sidney Vineburg officiating. Entombment at Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. Visit www.malcorefuneralhome.com to send an online condolence to the family.

Joey, Mick and Mike wish to thank the Manitowoc Rescue, Police and Coroner Departments for their compassion and assistance.

So saddened by the news. Prayers to Scott's family including his beloved pets in his passing. My son, Kyle, was so lucky to have had Scott as a teacher and FRIEND, not just once but twice in his life - at Syble Hopp and then years later in Manitowoc. Scott knew and understood Kyle so well and vice versa. He believed in Kyle and never underestimated his abilities. Through Scott's love of photography, we have so many happy moments shared between them to keep forever...and the memories. Kyle would say "kuh, kuh, kuh" (I love you) to you, Scott. Actually, I recall he did at times. Thank you and peace to you and your family. Carol Stokes

Our deepest sympathies to Scott Kress' family, friends, and co-workers. Although we didn't know him that well or for that long, we were looking forward to working with him as he taught our son next school year. We are saddened we no longer have the opportunity. Through our brief meetings with him, it was apparent he truly cared about his students.

Mike, Mick and Joey: Scott was a good friend to me. Couldn't get away from him without hearing some joke or funny comment that made getting up in the morning worthwhile. I will miss him terribly. He was a wonderful person and little did I know when we met at Syble Hopp that I would one day be able to call him "my good friend". We had a lot of laughs together. He cared about his students so much. It was a privilege to be Scott's friend. I will miss him so much. I will never forget you, Scott. Love,Ruth

I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Scott Kress. Words can't describe how forthcoming, loving, and compassionate Scott was; especially to individuals he taught who are considered less fortunate. He did this by believing and putting faith in them and their abilities which were not easily seen by others. By genuinely relating to his students he got it, and was very capable to see potential and positivity in everyone he came in contact with. My son and I were blessed to have cross paths with Scott. The sacrifices, choices, and passion Scott put forth both personally and professionally for my son, and others like him is truly immeasurable. I will be forever grateful. This world has lost a great person, one of the few genuine, loving, caring individuals with a passion for teaching the less fortunate. He will be missed.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Scott Kress. He was one of the kindest people I have had the privilege to know. He had an excellent sense of humor and genuinely cared about the wellbeing of his students and those he worked with. I enjoyed our intellectual conversations and have learned how to be a better teacher by observing, discussing, and laughing about different aspects of our daily experiences. Scott taught me to see the humor in many challenging situations and to always view problems from different perspectives. In this sense, he was an unbelievable mentor, friend, and wonderful guy. He will be greatly missed by all of us. ~Max Long

To the family of Scott Kress, May you find peace in this difficult time. Scott was a great man. He loved teaching and it showed. He was great at forming relationships with students who others may have struggled to connect with. He was always learning and growing and finding new ways to meet the needs of his students. We didn't always talk about work. He was quick to talk about his sons. His stories about them were filled with love and pride. He was a good person to the core. I am glad I got to know Scott this year. Knowing him has made me a better person. I will miss him. ~ Joanne K. Metzen, Director of Pupil Services, Manitowoc Public School District
