Meissen, Barbara Ann

Barbara Ann Meissen, age 76, formerly of 332 Johnson Street, Valders, entered eternal life while surrounded by her family on Friday, August 29, 2014 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center in Manitowoc.

Barbara was born on August 16, 1938 in Manitowoc to the late Paul and Viola Bastian Rathsack. She graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1957. She then completed her education at Fond du Lac School of Practical Nursing through St. Agnes and Winnebago Hospitals. On September 27, 1958, Barbara married Raymond H. Meissen at Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Manitowoc. Raymond preceded her in death on September 12, 1984. Barbara was employed as a nurse at Memorial Hospital and Holy Family Hospital. She also was a bookkeeper for her husband at Ray's Standard Station in Valders. Barbara worked for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a hearing technician. She completed her working career at St. Rita's Clinic at Holy Family Convent until her retirement in 2008. Barbara enjoyed watching Packer, Badger, and Brewer games, snowmobiling, cooking and baking, going on bus trips, reading, playing cards, and spending time with her family; and the 58' Pontiac. She was a membership chairman for Valders PTO, selection Committee member for the Valders K-4 building, Treasurer of Viking Snowriders Club, Cub Scout and Brownie Leader, St. Mary's Clarks Mills School Board member, and a member of St. Mary's Clarks Mills Christian Mothers.

Barbara is survived by three sons: Brad (Teri) Meissen, Cato; Jay Meissen and special friend Jane Stiles, Greenville; and Brian (Tammy) Meissen, Valders; two daughters: Wendy (Tom) Meyer, Manitowoc; and Melissa (Dave) Remiker, Two Rivers; two brothers: Paul (Beverly) Rathsack and Terry (Judy) Sleger, both of Manitowoc; sister: Linda (Elmer) Lehman, Weston; 10 grandchildren: Andy, Nick, and Cody Meyer; Morgan and Mitchel Meissen; Drew and Cole Remiker; Tori, Kayla, and Kassie Johnson; sister-in-law: Sr. Emiliana Meissen; brother-in-law: Jack Meissen; and her four legged friend: Maddie; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents: Paul and Viola Rathsack; husband: Raymond; infant son: Todd; stepfather: John Sleger; father-in-law and mother-in-law: John and Elizabeth Meissen; godchildren: Rolene Bastian and Rick Bastian; brothers and sisters-in-law: Joseph and Virginia Meissen, Leona Meissen, and Rose Meissen.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, 1121 North 14th Street, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Dave Pleier with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center, 620 North Water Street, Manitowoc, located on the south property of the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. The family will greet relatives and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 from 4 p.m until 7 p.m. A prayer service will be led by Mark Knipp at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Online condolences may be sent to the family at

Barb was very kind, caring, compassionate and generous to all she met placing other's needs before her own.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials in Barbara's name.

Barbara's family would like to give special thanks to Shady Lane Nursing Care Center 1st and 4th floor care, Theresa Patrick, Margie Meyer, Wendy, and her special caregivers for their kind and compassionate care.
