Howard Karstaedt, age 87, a Manitowoc resident, died Saturday morning, March 23, 2013 at Artisen Senior Living Center, Manitowoc.

Howard was born April 22, 1925 in Newton, WI, son of the late Edward and Lydia (Heckman) Karstaedt and stepmother Irma Heckman. Howard attended Elm Grove School. He later farmed with his father and brother Gordon until the early 1960's. Howard then married Olive Van Schepen on September 25, 1966 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. She predeceased him Dec. 6, 2000.

Howard worked for DHIA from 1969-2000 as a milk tester. From 1980-2000 he grew and sold corn, pumpkins and potatoes on the farm. Howard was known as the "Pumpkin Man". He held tours of the farm for the school children.

Survivors include one stepdaughter and two step sons-in-law: Judith & Jack Lorenz, Leesburg, Fl; Tom Rath, Stevens Point; four grandchildren: Anne Fiebiger and Mark, Leesburg, FL; Donna Rowling and Steve, Chicago; John Lorenz and Erin, Chicago; Paul Lorenz, Chicago; seven great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law: Gordon and Leone Karstaedt, Manitowoc

one sister and brother-in-law: Doris Schuler and husband Wilmer, Cleveland, WI; two sisters; Jeanette Thorman and Delores Scheidt. Nieces, nephews and many, many friends also survive. Howard was preceded in death by a step daughter Susan Rath, one brother and sister-in-law Orville and Laverne Karstaedt, and one sister and three brothers-in-law: Grace and Leroy Olm, Harold Thorman, and Adrian Scheidt.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Faith Lutheran Church, Valders. Officiating at the services will be the Rev. James Rasmus with burial at Gjerpen Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the Faith Lutheran Church on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m.
