Carl Reitmeyer Obituary

Reitmeyer, Carl S.

Carl S. Reitmeyer, 94, died on Friday, December 9, 2016, at his residence, Allouez Sunrise Village in Green Bay.

Carl was born in Cato, WI, on May 12, 1922, son of the late Joseph and Emma Yohanek Reitmeyer. He graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, in 1939, and then attended 1 year at the Manitowoc Business College. At the beginning of the Submarine program at Manitowoc Shipbuilding, he worked in the Timekeeping Department until October 1942. He enlisted in the US Navy on October 22, 1942. After boot camp, a 4-month Yeoman School at Great Lakes, and Small Craft Training in Miami, FL, he was assigned to PC-1129. PC-1129 was then sent into the South Pacific on escort duty until the invasions of Peleliu and the Philippines. Carl was involved in the invasion of Nasugbu, P.I., where 274 prisoners were liberated by a US Army Ranger Unit. PC-1129 was sunk on January 31, 1945 by a Japanese suicide boat off the coast of Luzon in the Philippines, and rescued by Destroyer Escort DE-586. He then was assigned duty in New York City, at the Port Director's Office and later at the discharge center at Lido Beach, Long Island, NY.

He spent 4 years employed as a CPA before rejoining Manitowoc Shipbuilding in 1950 as Data Processing Operations Manager, retiring in 1984 as Supervisor of Computer Operations. After retirement, he spent 3 years with the startup of Peter's Pantry doing painting and maintenance, and the next 17 years working with Habit for Humanity. He was proud of having donated 7 gallons of blood over his lifetime. Carl was an avid fisherman and hunter, carpenter, wood carver, and also did jewelry and lapidary. There was nothing he couldn't fix.

He is survived by Ruth Kopidlansky Reitmeyer his wife of 69 years; 3 daughters: Judy (Dan) Stralka, Mill Valley, CA; Mary (Glenn) Dickert, Hartford, WI; Patrice (Keith) Elsner, Green Bay, WI; 3 sons: Michael (Sharon) Reitmeyer, Cochecton Center, NY; Mark (Ellie) Reitmeyer, Minneapolis, MN; and Christopher (Heather) Reitmeyer, Green Bay, WI. 4 grandchildren: Tiffany Dickert, Valrico, FL; Tracee (Mark) Dickert-Crawford, Forest Park, IL; and Hans and Joseph Reitmeyer, Green Bay, WI. Also survived by 2 sisters and a brother-in-law: Daisy Brennan, Manitowoc, WI; Leonetta (Mitch) Silver, Manitowoc, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Emma Reitmeyer, brothers: Joseph (Mayme) Reitmeyer and George (Betty) Reitmeyer; sisters: Eleanor (Clarence) Sittman, Alma (Clarence) Carbon, Olive (John) Grall, Marion (Raymond) Jagemann and brother-in-law Kenneth Brennan.
