Services were held on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 for Joan M. Callahan R.N. CHPN of Montgomery, TX. Joan passed away peacefully on Monday, March 26th surrounded by her family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer. She is preceded in death by her parents, John Miller and her beloved mother, Helen Landes. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 44 years, Michael Callahan Sr. along with her son Michael Callahan Jr. and wife Bobbie of Kingwood, Texas along with her grandchildren that she loved dearly, Chase Michael and Lauren. She is also survived by her sister, Anna P. Miller and family of Delaware and Maryland. She was born June 18th 1946 in New York but relocated to the Houston area from Baltimore in 1976. A graduate of the Westchester School of Nursing in 1967, Joan pursued a career in nursing in Humble, TX with Northeast Medical Center and later Memorial Hermann Hospital where she retired in January of this year. Over the years, she worked in many aspects of the nursing industry but finally settled on what was for her the most rewarding aspect of nursing and that was hospice care. For 20 years, Joan provided critical care and pain management to terminally ill patients allowing them to pass peacefully and with dignity many times at home with family and friends. She also worked with the patients families making sure they were comforted by the manner in which she cared for their loved ones. Joan had a special bond with animals and in consideration of that the family is requesting that a donation be made to The Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary, P.O. Box 877, Montgomery, TX 77356, in honor of the Joan M. Callahan Memorial.
