Paul W. de Fremery
8/31/1922 - 7/12/2014
Paul W. de Fremery, Jr. was born on August 31, 1922 in Oakland, California and passed away peacefully in his sleep in Nampa, Idaho on the evening of July 12, 2014. He was the son of Paul William de Fremery, Sr. and Lucille Meredith Parr. Paul's father passed away when he was 12 years old. He and his sister were raised by their mother, fondly known as Buppy, in Oakland and the North Bay area of California.
Paul graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco and received an undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. After graduation he enlisted in the Army and attended Officers Candidate School. He went on active duty on January 6, 1944 as an infantry unit commander. Paul met his future wife, Mary Patricia Kydd, in New York, prior to shipping out during World War II.
Paul fought in a number of campaigns during the war, including Normandy in Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes in Central Europe. He was wounded on three separate occasions and awarded the Purple Heart with two oak clusters as well as a World War II Victory Medal.
He returned to New York after his discharge and married Pat on June 20th 1946 at The Cathedral of the Incarnation in the Diocese of Long Island, New York. They moved to California shortly after their marriage. Two children were born to them, Peter in 1947 and Anne in 1950.
In 1954 they purchased a home in Mill Valley, Marin County, California. Paul successfully pursued his career as a printer and bookbinder until his retirement and the sale of his business to his friend and business partner, Duncan McCallum, in the mid 1980's. Pat gradually lost her eyesight but they both continued to enjoy traveling, with a highlight of their trips being an excursion to China. They also enjoyed music in all forms and attended the Mill Valley Chamber Music Society presentations and were often at the Symphony. Attending live theater presentations was also a regular event in their lives. They enjoyed family get togethers, dinner parties, and evening cocktails were always in order. They loved collecting antiques and had many family heirlooms that they treasured.
Pat and Paul were together for 63 years, residing in the same house at 164 Lovell Avenue, from 1954 until Pat's death in December 2009. Paul continued to live in Mill Valley with the help and assistance of their good friend Adrienne Bermingham. His declining health forced a move to Idaho in May of 2010 at which time he came to live with his daughter, Anne deFremery Muller, in Marsing, Idaho. The health of both continued to decline and in July of 2011 they moved to Sunny Ridge Independent Living and later to Sunny Ridge Assisted Living.
Paul is survived by: his son Pete deFremery (Kathy) of Larkspur, California and their children Michelle (Joe) Ferretti of Alexandria, Virginia and Wayne (Sukja) deFremery of Goyang-dong, South Korea, and their children; his daughter Anne deFremery Muller of Nampa, Idaho and her children, Isaac (Nichole) Muller and Robert (Amanda) Muller and their children; his sister-in-law Phyllis Faber of Mill Valley, California.
After a brief memorial service on Friday July 18th, at 10:30 am at Sunny Ridge Retirement Center, Paul's ashes will be laid to rest with those of his wife Pat in the family plot at the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Make A Wish foundation, 4742 N. 24th St., Suite 400, Phoenix AZ 85016-4862.
