Avis Marie Withers-Sandy
January 25, 1922 - January 23, 2014
Avis Marie Withers-Sandy passed away peacefully at her home in Nampa on January 23, 2014, two days before her 92nd birthday. Avis was born on January 25, 1922 to Ena and Ruth Armstrong at the Mercy Hospital in Nampa, Idaho. She was raised in the Lower Fairview District in Nampa where she attended elementary school. She then attended Caldwell High School where she graduated in 1940. Upon graduation Avis attended Boise Secretarial School which led to her employment as a secretary for the Morrison-Knudsen Company in Boise.
Avis married William Darold Withers on May 15, 1942 and moved to Bremerton, Washington where Darold worked at the Puget Sound Shipyards repairing ships damaged in the war. Avis & Darold were blessed with the birth of their daughter Charlene on March 25, 1943. Shortly after, Darold was called to active duty while Avis continued to work intermittently for Morrison-Knudsen. After the war, Avis and her family lived in several areas, settling permanently in Boise where she truly loved being a housewife and stay-at-home mom to Charlene. Darold died in 1965 followed by Charlene's passing in 1970.
Avis enjoyed working for over 10 years as a receptionst and bookkeeper for several Boise area doctors and then married James Sandy in1974. They enjoyed an active life together- traveling, bowling, gardening and spending time with family. After Jim's death in 1981 Avis went to work as a private bookkeeper & secretary in Boise where she continued to work part-time until 2002. She moved to Nampa in 2003 where she had resided since. During that time Avis continued to travel, enjoy her gardening (especially her Roses), and spending time with her many, many friends, neighbors and family.
Over the years Avis was an active and devoted member of the Southminster United Presbyterian Church in Boise, where she served as a Deacon, and after moving to Nampa attended Franklin Community Church. She was actively involved with the P.E.O. chapters BX and then BY, as well as a volunteer with the St. Alphonsus Auxillary in Boise. She was a dedicated BSU fan from the very beginning, and her family and friends will always remember her as a caring, loving, charitable person.
Avis is survived by her sister, Bette Yribar, of Calif.; cousin Mary K. (Lynn) Sprague of Boise; Nieces Pauline Parks, Karla Prisk, and Bobbie Young of Calif.; Niece Diana (Richard) Taggart of Nampa; Nephew Kirby (Diann) Armstrong of NC; Nephew Richard A.
