Our dearly loved Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, and Friend, Clifford Gibbons Hawkes, peacefully passed away on April 27, 2013 at his home.
Clifford was born January 13, 1918 in Preston, Idaho to Thomas Herbert Hawkes and Elizabeth A. Gibbons Hawkes. As a young man, Clifford loved playing football, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends outdoors. He loved his parents and his siblings, and his love of family became the foundation of his life. He graduated from Albion Normal College in 1940. He taught school and then served in the U.S. Navy in Africa during WW II. After the war, he farmed at Tuttle, Idaho and Vale, Oregon from 1946 until 1994, He married Mary Darlene Mc Crea on June 5th 1946 and they had three daughters, Cheryl Hawkes Wettstein, Leslea Hawkes Jensen and Janice "Jani" Hawkes Jenkins. Clifford and Darlene were sealed with their daughters in the Idaho Falls Temple August 21, 1969.
Clifford had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and he was pleased with the life that he had lived. Clifford's greatest accomplishment and joy in his life was his family and he took great satisfaction in his relationships with family and friends. Clifford taught, "…family is the most important thing in your life. Making lots of money doesn't compare with having those great relationships. Take time to enjoy your family."
Clifford was preceded in death by his sweetheart Darlene in 2005, his siblings, Ada Winegar, Vanda Smith, Willis Hawkes, Mary Simpson, Gene Hawkes and Nathan Hawkes. He is survived by his sister Margaret Hawkes Merrill (Keith Merrill) of Paul, ID; his three daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Gary Bowman, Leslea and Ron Jensen, and Jani and Kirk Bowler; grandchildren, Angee (Brent) Wettstein Thompson, Lori (Thad) Wettstein Wilkey, Duane (Roslyn) Wettstein, Josh Bowman, Kim (Jon) Jensen Pingree, Ryan (Alysia) Jensen, Eric (Crystal) Jensen, Dennis (Katie) Jensen, Megan (Kevin) Jensen Hyer, Jesse (Sarah) Jenkins, Elizabeth Jenkins and Allie Jenkins & 33 great grandchildren. Clifford will be remembered for his charitable nature, happy smile, love for his daughters and his posterity.
A viewing will be held from 5 pm to 8 pm, Wednesday, May 1st at Bowman Funeral Parlor, 5525 N. Glenwood St, Garden City. Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Thursday, May 2nd at the LDS Church, 309 W. Main Street, Middleton, preceded by a viewing at 10 am. Committal services will follow at 3 pm, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, Boise.
