Daniel F. "Danny" Nelson
January 17, 1931 - February 15, 2014
Danny Nelson, 83, of Melba, passed away at his home on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. A Graveside Service to honor his life will be held at 11 AM on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at the Melba Cemetery. There will be a lunch at the Melba Senior Center for family and friends immediately following the graveside service. The family will greet loved ones and friends at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel, 415 12th Ave. So., Nampa on Thursday evening from 4 - 7 P.M.
Danny was born January 17, 1931 to Lester and Marie Nelson in Albion, Nebraska. He was the second son and third child of six. When he was five, he moved with his parents and three siblings to Nampa, Idaho where they lived with his uncle and aunt, Clarence and Ella Nelson, on Amity Road. Soon his dad rented a farm on Robinson Rd. where they lived about a year and the kids attended Greenhurst School.
The following year Lester bought a farm just north of Melba on Southside Blvd. They lived there until 1946. They then moved to the place south of Melba near the Walter's Butte that would become their "home place".
Danny played all sports and was known as "Dangerous Dan McGrew". He graduated in 1949. Soon after graduation in 1950 Danny enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for nearly two years.
Following his stint in the service he came home and moved to a farm in the Wilson area of Owyhee County. While living there he met and married Martha (Marty) Minga.
They met by happenstance when she and a friend ran up to Melba after more soda pop on a hot Sunday afternoon in July. They were married after the crops were out, in 1962 in Elko, Nevada.
Kenneth (Kenny) was born there in 1963, and Darren was born in 1965.
Later, Lester and Marie moved to Nampa and Danny and Marty bought the "home place" that included the milk cows.
They added Sherry to the family in 1969. There their children grew up, attended Melba schools and participated in sports, FFA, etc.
Danny, along with Rick Farner, coached girls' softball for several years. These girls were very well trained and won Tri-County Champs several times.
He was recognized by the Crookham Seed Co. as an outstanding seed corn farmer on two occasions. He loved irrigating and being a real farmer. He was an accomplished chukar hunter and trap shooter.
He was a member of the Divin-Slonecker American Legion Post 126 of Melba, the Melba Gun Club and was one of the organizers of the Melba FFA Memorial Picnic area and Scholarship Fund, established in 1988 following the death of his daughter in a plane crash, in Denver in 1987, along with two other members of the Melba FFA Chapter.
Danny is survived by his wife, Marty, of 51 years, and sons, Kenny (Geneva) and Darren; sisters, Marjorie Hoagland of Melba and Patti Nelson of Nampa. Also, a brother, Larry of Melba; and 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Marie Nelson, his daughter, Sherry, and brothers, LB and Harley.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Melba FFA Memorial Fund, 12197 Deer Flat Rd., Nampa, Idaho 83686 or to the Melba Senior Center, Melba, Idaho 83641.
