Laura M. Mangum was born in Portland, Oregon on May 17, 1921. She was born in her grandfather's home. He was a medical doctor. She spent her early years in Portland living in the upstairs of the drug store where her father was a pharmacist. She loved being able to get all the candy she could eat from the store. As a young girl, she attended a nearby Free Methodist Church whose pastor's wife took her under her wing and led her to her faith in Jesus Christ. She attended Portland schools and graduated from the High School of Commerce in 1939. In the fall of 1939 she and her lifelong friend, Sue Knowles took the train to NNC in Nampa, Idaho. At that time the school was out in the sagebrush and was a depressing culture shock to a city girl. She had wonderful roommates in Hadley Hall who became friends for life. She met Marvin Sporleder, a ministerial student there and they were married in Salem, Oregon on August 1st, 1941. They moved to Portland, Oregon and he worked in the shipyards during the war. In 1943 they began pastoring in Waitsburg, WA and later in Clellum, WA. In 1945 they returned to NNC in Nampa, ID for more education. After Leaving Nampa, they pastored in Mollala & Corvallis, Oregon and Sandpoint, ID. In 1958 they returned to Nampa to work for NNC. Laura worked in the school's bookstore and later for the music department. They were jobs she very much loved and enjoyed. She retired in 1988. She had a beloved hobby in her later years of making stained glass. It was her great joy to make a large window for the Administration building of NNU and one for the prayer chapel on the NNU campus. She loved making a stained glass window to be donated for the annual NNU homecoming auction each year. Her children and friends were fortunate recipients of not only her stained glass work but tole painting and wood working. Her Parkinson's disease started to slow down her being able to do her stained glass. Marvin passed away in January of 1989. She married Paul Mangum in 1995. They had some very nice years of volunteering for NNU and college church & traveling the USA and visiting family.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Mangum of Nampa, ID; her 2 daughters and sons- in law, Leroy & Suzanne Horne, and Dave & Joan Lancaster, Nampa, ID; 2 sons and daughter-in-law Brian & Leslie Sporleder of Meridian, ID and Lindsay Sporleder of Los Angeles, CA. 1 stepson, Paul Mangum Jr. of Eureka CA; 1 stepdaughter, Anne DeCloss of Nampa and 3 grandchildren, Julie Roberts, Ryan Lancaster, and Caty Solace. 3 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion Long and Helen White, her brother, Donald Long, and husband, Marvin Sporleder & stepson, Peter Mangum.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Mangum Family Nursing Scholarship, 623 So. University Blvd., Nampa, ID 83686.

We will miss Laura very much. She was a dear friend and a wonderful secretary for the Division of Fine Arts at NNU. We will always remember when she and Paul visited us in Europe shortly after their marriage.
