U.S. Marine Sgt. Brent Vernon Durrant
U.S. Marine Sgt. Brent Vernon Durrant, 29 died in a tragic accident on Dec. 19, 2012 when the motorcycle he was riding struck an overturned car on Interstate 15 north of San Diego, California. At the time of his death, Brent was an active duty Marine serving with the USMC 1st Law Enforcement Battalion at Camp Pendleton near San Diego.
Brent was born in Caldwell, Idaho on March 9th, 1983 to Carolyn Durrant Nelson and Wendell Durrant. Brent had two older sisters and two older brothers, but his arrival eight years after his nearest sibling earned him special status as the official baby of the family. Although Sgt. Durrant's physical stature and conditioning eventually rendered him a really big baby who literally towered over the rest of the family and caused all, but his mother, to rethink his official family title. Throughout his early years, the family moved often and Brent attended schools in Idaho, California, Alaska and Montana. He attended high school in Great Falls, Montana and graduated there in May of 2001.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. and embarked on a career that would take him throughout the world with an extended deployment in Japan and two combat duty tours in Iraq. He had many temporary deployments for training and other military police duties in places like the Philippines, South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia and Mongolia where he helped construct houses with the Habitat for Humanity Foundation. Along the way, he moved up through the ranks to his final rank of Sergeant and his last deployments were stateside in Arizona and Southern California. He was hoping for another combat deployment and he expressed a desire to remain in the Marine Corp. when his current enlistment was up in 2014. For Brent, honor and service to his country were the cornerstones of his life and everything he did.
In November of 2008, Brent married Dawn Hogoboom and the couple had a son, James Ryan Durrant, on April 13th, 2011. Though he survived only three months, James left an indelible mark on the lives of all who were privileged to know him.
Throughout his own life, Brent maintained a cheerful and exuberant nature that allowed him to forge close friendships and loyal bonds with those who shared his love of motorcycles, hunting, fishing and virtually anything that explodes. He was a member of several motorcycle riding organizations and many of those friends have been very supportive of his family both now and following the loss of his infant son.
In addition to James Ryan, Brent was preceded in death by his grandparents, and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Dawn Durrant; step-son, Austin Davis; mother, Carolyn Nelson; step-father, Roger Nelson; father, Wendell Durrant; step-mother, Earlene Durrant; sisters, Julie (Carl) Taylor and Christine (Lloyd) Bair; brothers, David (Kim) Durrant and Mark (Kristy) Durrant; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
