Leo Rural Gifford, 80, of Nampa, Idaho, passed away peacefully at his home on April 19, 2013. He was born in Osgood, Idaho on March 5, 1933, to Rural William and Jennie Thornton Gifford. He has an older sister, Lareve and younger sister Juanita. He attended schools in Nampa and graduated in 1951. He then attended BYU where he met and later married Katherine May Fromm in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 23, 1953. He began teaching in the Nampa School District while completing his degree in secondary education. He started teaching in the LDS Church Educational System in 1966 with assignments that took his family to Western Samoa, Olympia, WA., Winslow, AZ, and Salt Lake City, UT where he taught disabled students. His family then returned home to Nampa, ID in 1984 so he could help his father build adjustable pulpits for the Church. His greatest delight in life was teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to his seminary, institute and adult religion students. He served faithfully in many callings in the church including as bishop of the Belvedere Ward, high priest group leader, high councilor and Sunday School teacher. He and his wife served missions in the Boise Idaho LDS Temple for over 7 years, the Nampa Family History Center, the LDS Institute at Boise State and led an Addiction Recovery Group. He loved to teach, read and study the gospel, work on his family history and serving others.
He is survived by his dear wife of almost 60 years, Katherine; his children: Michael (Christine), Steven (Carla), Doug (Sheila), David, Bruce (Barbara), Brent (Cindy), Mona (Jari), Kevin (Gayle), Melinda (Eric), a foster daughter Amy Larsen (Kirk); siblings: Lareve (Jim) Pulver and Juanita (Richard) Brunson; 38 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rural William and Jennie Thornton Gifford.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in the Nampa 35th Ward LDS Chapel, 1500 Smith Ave. in Nampa. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Zeyer Funeral Chapel, 83 N. Midland Blvd. Nampa and on Tuesday at the church from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to services.
