He has an older sister, Lareve and younger sister Juanita. He attended schools in Nampa and graduated in 1951. He then attended BYU where he met and later married Katherine May Fromm in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 23, 1953. He began teaching in the Nampa School District while completing his degree in secondary education. He started teaching in the LDS Church Educational System in 1966 with assignments that took his family to Western Samoa, Olympia, WA., Winslow, AZ, and Salt Lake City, UT where he taught disabled students. His family then returned home to Nampa, ID in 1984 so he could help his father build adjustable pulpits for the Church. His greatest delight in life was teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to his seminary, institute and adult religion students. He served faithfully in many callings in the church including as bishop of the Belvedere Ward, high priest group leader, high councilor and Sunday School teacher. He and his wife served missions in the Boise Idaho LDS Temple for over 7 years, the Nampa Family History Center, the LDS Institute at Boise State and led an Addiction Recovery Group. He loved to teach, read and study the gospel, work on his family history and serving others.
